Allegedly, RealPlayer 10 is less irritating than earlier versions. Has anyone actually tried it out yet? I don't want to get my system infested with the usual Real crap if I can help it. (Yes, I know there's quite a strong anti-Real sentiment on CP). Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

RealPlayer? Surely you must be joking? :) [RANT] Just because the European union is bent on taking away consumer choice and forcing their constituents to pay for something they would have got for free anyway doesn't mean you should encourage them. Why are computer savvy Europeans not up in arms about the EU taking away their freedom of choice? Just a digression, sorry, but it really burns me to see Europeans sit back like sheep and allow their government to do this to them and their only reaction is to parrot the "party line" about how good this is and how much more "freedom" and "choice" they will have without taking 2 minutes to actually *THINK* about what the consequences are (and also apparently, no thought about the actual definition of the words "freedom" and "choice"). [END RANT] :-D I've tried Real in every incarnation probably since the day the first version was released up until about a year ago. In every case through every type of internet connection up to an including a t1 at one point that was one hop away from the source of the media it performed consistently terribly. In more recent years with Windows Media Player as comparison there is quite a clear difference in quality at any speed and supported format. That's leaving aside all the spyware and adware issues that cause most here to hate Real in any incarnation. It's just a technically inferior product and I'm not talking slightly or it's open to debate or interpretation, glaringly, obviously, technically inferior. Now it's possible that RP10 has finally been fixed to work after all these years, but I'm not very hopeful. I bet you the company has more marketing staff and staff devoted to marketing than they do R&D people. They are one big marketing and EU lobbying firm that happens to make an inferior media player. All that being said, I would love it if you posted an honest side by side comparision of Windows Media and RP 10 if your willing to try RP10. Note the bandwidth requirements versus quality of image and sound for a selection of sites that offer both RP10 support and windows media player support.

Then don't install it. I'd recommend anyone with Real software on their PC to go out into the woods and put the PC out of its misery. It sounds tough, but, really, it's the most humane thing to do.

And if they installed it willingly themselves, they might consider a "PC pact" and poing the weapon in the other direction!

Slightly off-topic (and hopefully not a repost...), but here (Scroll down to "Real Alternative")[^] is at least one alternative to RP. It may not have all the fancy 'features' of the original, but those are enough for me (playing an audio stream or a .rm audio file). BTW, a Quicktime alternative seems to be available on the same page.

True. As far as I remember all Real player versions have been quite painful for people like myself. And the irony is the people at Real dont get it. I wish I could tell them know I much I hate Real player's "features" like auto-startup, marketing popups, "messages" and huge memory footprint. Farhan Noor Qureshi

In the past, Real and Quicktime have messed so much with my machine that I wouldn't even install them on a Virtual PC machine... I see dumb people

No. Real had a real chance to own the media format on the web and they blew it. They won't get another chance from me. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder
