PHP & MySQL for Dummies is a good starting point, fairly thorough, but easily understood. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I did the same. Having a good ASP experience I learned PHP quickly and easily. Actually I started to write code in couple of hours. Most difficult was to install and configure PHP, MySQL, Apache and ZDE (http://www.zend.com/) on my W2K server. Apache was installed on the port 8080 in addition to IIS sitting on 80. Zend environment is just great. Hre's an excellent site http://www.sitepoint.com/ and they published excellent books like http://www.sitepoint.com/launch/17871e/ and http://www.sitepoint.com/launch/24dc6f
