To those of you that play the guitar...
-
... and those that would like to: what is your favourite song to play on the guitar or what song would you like to know how to play? I'm expecially thinking about those songs that require you to use your finger-picking skills, for instance like "Babe, I'm gonna leave you". I'm looking for some ideas to broaden my "repertoire" so any ideas would be welcome :-)

"Nights in White Satin" (Moody Blues) is fun to play, as is "Music of the Night" (from the "Phantom of the Opera"). Also among my favorites are: "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce; "Sad Lisa" by Cat Stevens; "Find the Cost of Freedom" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash; "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie; "Kathy's Song" by Simon and Garfunkel; "C'est la Vie" by Emerson, Lake, & Palmer; "Hush a' Bye," "The Cruel War" and "Polly Von" by Peter, Paul, & Mary. They're oldies, but great fun to finger pick. Well, at least they're fun on a twelve-string; some may be a little dull on only 6 strings. But they're still great songs!:-D Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Smoke on the Water? Freebird?:laugh: Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.
You have an evil streak there, Tim... Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I saw a band do a cover of smoke on the water with an oven mit. I think it actually improved the song.

I absolutely LOVE playing Stairway to Heaven! ;P I would really like to learn how to play the solo in it though... I can play it but really slowly, I can't play it fast or with fancy effects :( Oh, and I also like playing Thunderstruck.
What do you mean by fancy effects ? The only effect I can think of on that solo is string bending. If you can't bend your strings, buy some lighter ones. I had that problem early on, too. That's a pretty easy solo, you should break it into bite size pieces, and perhaps download a program like 'guitar pro' that will give you a backing you can speed up over time to get up to speed. Enjoy this one (mp3): The Flight of The Bumble Bee (Ultra fast) [^]. ~~~ although it's not the original. I once found an website with mp3 available for two Russian ladies playing "The Flight of The Bumble Bee" duo with Banjos about two years ago. Maxwell Chen

Pink Floyd's "Is There Anybody Out There?" from "The Wall" Here is short WAV file of me playing it[^] Please hold your insults - I had just clipped my right-hand fingernails a few hours earlier - deadly for classical or finger-style playing. It is an arpeggiated Am chord where the root note advances by mostly half-steps. An excellent finger-style practice piece. The tablature is here: Is There ANybody Out There tablature[^] edit: Weird - it sounded fine in sndrec32 before I ULed it but when I tested the link and it played in WinAmp, it sounds like it is going through a distortion pedal. Kind of cool :)

That's about the only one I can play these days, it sorts of keep sticking to the fingers so that when I pick up the guitar every second year, I can still play it without too many problems. Weird... "After all it's just text at the end of the day. - Colin Davies "For example, when a VB programmer comes to my house, they may say 'does your pool need cleaning, sir ?' " - Christian Graus

Yeah - it is more of a guitar excercise than a song, but when I first heard it in 79 I loved it and knew I had to play it. A few years later, I started playing the guitar and learned to play that from listening to the song. It is absolutely the easiest song to play that still sounds rich and full.

"Street Spirit" by Radiohead is a great song to finger-pick... Uses a Am/Em/C9 arpeggio chord sequence.
