Well... Today has been a terrible day work wise. After spending most of yesterday getting my head around some changes to some database and report generating scripts. I get a full head of steam this morning implementing all the changes. As I am moving projects, I am also moving to a different office - so I am now working in the building down the street. I set up my PC on my new desk and get everything working. About 20 minutes later I get a strange message about lsass failing to write some data and that Windows will shut down in 60 seconds so save any work. Anyway the PC starts to reboot then I get a message that Microsoft "appologizes for the inconvenience" but that Windows can't boot properly. To cut a long story short, the Windows Setup refused to believe there was a hard disk available, Ghost didn't see the hard disk, some obscure recovery software from a company I never heard of did acknoledge that there was a hard disk, but that it was only 400Mb in size (about 1% of its actual size). The BIOS did see the Hard Disk and did correctly report its size, but that was the only thing that did. On taking the old disk out it was noted that it was absolutely roasting. A new hard disk was put in the PC and the drive image was sucked down the network. So, I now have a nice freshly reset installation and I've lost all the morning's work. (Thank God for Source Safe otherwise I'd have lost lots more) I've now got some VPN software at home and I'm partially caught up - but its now past 1AM and I'm going to bed. [Sorry that this wasn't a terribly exciting or positive post - but I just needed to vent my fustration - Does anyone know any good jokes?]

When HD is not readable, fails on every occasion it can, and is HOT when removed it is still possible to get the data off it ... yes you should get new drive, and set it up with OS, but you should be able to briefly use the old drive once is cold. This does not work in all cases, and you only have a short time, but you can use this technique to get the data you desperately need. Pz

People posted earlier about freezing the HDD and running it on its side as possible temporary fixes, but sounds like you've already worked through it.
