Does anybody else run SETI@HOME ?
-
Just wondering about this. Also, would users like to setup a CodeProject SETI team? I have been runing SETI for most of this year and have so far completed 206 units. Has anybody else at CP done more? Roger Allen the :) man
I'm up to 1221 units. I am a user since May 25 1999, the very beginning of Seti@Home. I should have more units, but someone in my company decided that our proxy should not admint setiathome (but he did leave an exit for his Seti@home) and I haven't been able to work again until June. I'm looking forward to my new P4 1.8Ghz. ;P

I've been running SETI for about 6 months and have run up 304 units. It would be more if the aliens from Alpha Centauri would stop dropping in for a quick game of Diablo II ;P ----------------------------- "I leave no turn un-stoned." - John Simmons, Nov 6 2001 -----------------------------

I used to run the Cancer version of the application on my old K6-2. Never actually managed to upload anything back to the server though  What impact would these applications have on the longitivity of your CPU? Surely it's going to wear the CPU out over a period of time, plus you'll get overheating problems and high power consumption. Simon Hey, it looks like you're writing a letter! Sonork ID 100.10024

The impact will not be bigger that the impact of turning it on an off. you see, what really kills CPU are the transitories that are generated whenever you turn it on or off. And the overheating problems should not be a concern, your system should be designed to be able to cope with these problems. My computer is on an working 24 hours a day and I've had no problem. At work we've had an HP workstation on for 6 years, the other day we had to turn it off for maintenance of the servers and we never could turn it on again. And the power consumption will not be really big, the most power consuming part of a computer is the screen, and I'm sure you can turn it off while you analyze a signal.

Looks like I am well behind most users on number of units completed. Maybe I should have started earlier. I have had my PC running 24 hours/day for months just to get this far! ;P Roger Allen wrote: Also, would users like to setup a CodeProject SETI team? Anyone up for this? Roger Allen the :) man

Are you running the command-line or screensaver version of the seti@home client ? I switched from the screensaver to command line and cut my avg. time per workunit from 16h to 11h40m.

hi! i'm also running seti@home... Results returned: 381 Last result returned: 14/11/01 10:16:34 Total CPU time: 1.04 yrs Avg. CPU time: 23:54:56 Rank: 208,591 of 3,370,621 (93.799%) this is on a compaq 366 mhz notebook. i also use a nice little tool - setispy - with it. nice little program that adds months of interest to keeping the thing running! i have one question - does anyone ever notice that at times quite anomalous results are returned very quickly to the db and _no_ credit for the result is added to your account? i've seen this happen 2 or 3 times (no idea if or how often it's happened and i don't notice it). if anyone else has noticed it, any idea then what gives?
