Advice on vegas + grand-canyon

Hi all, need some advise from anyone who knows a bit about the vegas area - going to be in LV for three nights (Friday-Sunday) but would like to extend my stay and visit maybe the grand canyon or some other national park..however I know absolutely nothing about the geography of the place, how long it takes to get places, what kind of excursions are available etc.. My criteria is basically: some kind of hike/excursion which is led by an experienced person. I'd like to get up at (say) 5am and see the sunrise over the canyon, take pictures, that sort of thing. Then maybe some hiking, visit a lake, get back in the evening and rest up, go visit some other place the next day etc.. I have no idea how I would get to the grand-canyon (car/bus??), or even which bit I need to get to - heard it's kinda big :) so I'd be looking on leaving LV either sunday afternoon or early monday to get to the grand-canyon, maybe a couple of days there, then a day at some nice national park with lots to look at / explore, then get back to vegas to fly out later on in the week.. anyone got some good tips on what to see+do, where to stay whilst I'm there? I don't know if it is on the way to the Grand Canyon (it is on the border of Nevada and Arizona, so it might be. You can do the the Homer Simpson thing. For one thing, when I am in vegas, I don't want to leave. That said, my wife took me to see the Hoover DAMN (its huge)!!! That was an awesome sight. I don't know if it is on the way to the Grand Canyon (it is on the border of Nevada and Arizona, so it might be. You can do the the Homer Simpson thing. http://www.catch22.org.ukI would recommend Bryce Canyon [^]and Zion National Park [^]also. You could do a LV-Zion-Bryce-GrandCanyon-LV round trip. Grand Canyon is great, but I personally liked the colors/view at Byrce better prashu

My condolences... I spent a week there one day.:-D Actually, it seems like I've been driving past Barstow all my life. In Boy Scouts we camped at Goldstone. When I turned 18 and drove to Las Vegas after work to have breakfast, I stopped there for a pit stop briefly. When I drove through the godforsakenstinkindesert on company travel or to visit relatives at the river, I drove past Barstow. I still drive by a couple of times a year to visit relatives in the PRC, or on the rare occasions I get to visit home - Crestline. I have yet to discover a good reason to stop short of a full bladder.:cool: Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Did they ever rebuild the McDonald's that was in the train? I lunched there once; the food was inedible, like all McDonald's, but the ambience was delightful. I never bothered to look for it after I heard it burned... Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

For a brief stint in my life I moved to washington. For about 5 years actually. I didn't even know it burnt down! It's looks the same as it alwasys has for me. They addded a Quizones and a Panda express though. Did you know they are going to build an Indian Casino here in Barstow. Yeah, right by the outlet center. Did you ever go to the big outlet center? The one with the sign that says, "Over 99 Outlets" but really only six (outlets). /\ |_ E X E GG

Casinos in the PRC operated by Indian tribes are killing the economy here, as Laughlin used to be where Left-coasties went to play. Since 9/11 that crowd has discovered that it's easier to go to a nearby tribal casino than risking their lives travelling to Laughlin, and the tribes have responded to the easy money by building ever more casinos. One tribe makes so much off of the gamblers there that every member of the tribe is paid $10,000 a month for being a member, and the only 1,000 of them.
