Symantec LiveUpdate working for anyone?

Hi everyone, I'm loosing my nerves with Symantec LiveUpdate. It has been working fine for about two months after installing the Norton Antivirus 2004, but all of a sudden it started to refuse to download new virus definitions automatically. I had to push the "LiveUpdate" button to download new updates and virus definitions manually every now and then to stay up to date. I have tried to contact their crappy support but it's terrible. All you can get on the EU support site is the automated support assistant that is so stupid that it cannot answer any other question than "where to buy" or similar. Another option is paid phone support which costs half of the price of the product per incident, just to get the product do what it is supposed to do! X| I have tried to google and found some relevant documents describing in their knowledge base, but it didn't help. What's worse is that yesterday the LiveUpdate died for good, it now tells me that it cannot update the definitions and that I should check my subscription (which, BTW, expires in 8 months or so). This means that I have to download the 4+ MB virus definitions file from the securityresponse website each time. :(( Has anyone experienced this, and resolved these issues succesfully? Or do you have any other experience with NAV/LiveUpdate? Any suggestions on antivirus software in general? Thanks in advance, :sigh: Rado

Try to clean up your cache - and cache files that live update have create. Also use the latest version of live update, I think the older one not working any more with the news updates. Have you clean up your temporary files ? I have some small problems with live update but only for one day. After installing the latest versions of live update the problems have solved. Vini:rose:

Well I have tried to follow one of their KB articles on how to make it work again. This involved rebooting into the safe mode, completely wiping the liveupdate virus definition directory, and reinstalling the virus definitions, but this didn't help. I will try to look for newer version of liveupdate if it's available as a separate download somewhere and try this. Thanks for the suggestion! [EDIT]I was able to find the LiveUpdate update ;) at the symantec site, clickety[^]. I'm just downloading the file and looking forward for the results. Sorry to hear about your problems, Radoslav. I bought Norton Internet Security 2004 and it almost trashed my machine. I am now running AVG and Zone Alarm - both free products, with no problems. From what I have experienced NAV with live update works well if you have a solid internet connection (DSL/Cable). When used with a dialup (especially if a weaker connection - under 40K) the live update gets pretty flaky. I have not seen good experiences with anyones "Internet Security" suites, so avoid them. I have no measure of what over seas does to the mix. Get a mix. There are several to choose from. I use NAV with ZoneAlarm's firewall. Others around me use McAfee with Sygate very successfully. Which did not work at all well for me, but so what. Most have trial down loads. I do not mind getting old. It beats all the other options that can think of.

Same thing for me, LiveUpdate worked fine until some month ago, now I have to click LiveUpdate manually. I regret going from NIS 2003 to 2004. 2004 is really bloated, the GUI sucks and doesn't seem to work so well. I never had any trouble with NIS 2003. The LiveUpdate component should be updated when you run LiveUpdate if any update is available, so you shouldn't need to update it manually. Cheers, Fredrik

You can try AGV - http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php[^] Its free, it works well and it uptodate, and has no adware etc. You have to pay if you are a corporate user though.

Compuer Associates' EZ Trust Antivirus. I've been using it now for about 3 years with absolutely no troubles. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.
I know - they're a nightmare to deal with. I tried their InnocuLAN and firewall products years ago. They never worked, no instructions were provided, and tech support - if I could get anyone to talk to me at all - all spoke some unintelligible language completely unrelated to English. After two years of trying to make their very expensive products work I gave up. But the EZ Trust product works straight from the zip file, without ever having to read a nonexistent instruction or speak to an idiot. It just pops up (without fanfare or heart-stopping sounds and graphics) and tells me, "Erm, that last email is infected... I'll take care of it - okay?" And it does. As far as I'm concerned, it's the only justification for the company's existence.;P Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Your mileage may vary, as they say. I've seen successful installations of NAV, but only when it's been preinstalled by the OEM before the computer shipped. And most of those eventually fail and require a service call, usually in obscure ways that initially look like some other fault. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Well, I've had no problems. Have you checked the Live Update settings? There is a setting in there for how you want Live Update to update itself; i.e. automatic or manual. :confused:

Well, I've had no problems. Have you checked the Live Update settings? There is a setting in there for how you want Live Update to update itself; i.e. automatic or manual. :confused:
Sure, I disabled and re-enabled automatic updates several times in a hope that miracles still happen and that it will start to work again. :) (and it didn't help). All the LiveUpdate settings within NAV and also the settings of the LiveUpdate itself should be fine, according to the documents found on the symantec website. :( Rado

Well, it wasn't, version 2.0.39.0 was available on the symantec website, and I still had 1.xxxx on my PC. But this could be caused by me using a localized version of Norton Antivirus 2004 (it was cheaper than the original English version). After manually updating the LiveUpdate to the newest version, I have a mix of languages. :) Rado
