Was out walking on my birthday* yesterday, when I found a small grass snake sunning itself in the middle of the road, just where traffic would run it over. So I ended up picking it up and transfering it to the verge before it was involved in an accident. Looked like it had had a close encounter one time before as its tail tip was black where it had lost a small section. It sure was quick and felt slick (once I tried to pick it up). First time I have handled a snake :-D Its only the second time in recent years that I have encountered one. And in almost exactly the same spot! Anyone else had some close encounters with wildlife recently? * Happy birthdays don't count the day after, so please do not post any - this will help keep lounge posts to a minimum. Roger Allen wrote: Anyone else had some close encounters with wildlife recently? There was a barfight I just missed a couple weeks ago - does that count? I've run into a number of rattlesnakes in my time, but "saving" them was the farthest thought from my mind. Roadrunners, quail, and coyotes are common visitors around here. I've raised baby hawks, been stalked by a mountain lion, fed raccoons on my porch, stumbled onto a couple dozen vultures enjoying a large dog carcass, and taken a kangaroo rat to school for show-and-tell. I had a pool in my yard, the above ground type, fir the two little girls living with me, but it was destroyed when a bear decided it was time for a drink of water one night. And Grandpa had a trap door spider living in his yard once. When it vacated the nest he dug it up intact for me to take to school - very cool!:-D Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Not much wildlife around where you live? FWIW in suburban New Jersey (about 30 miles out of NYC) its fairly common to find deer, rabbits, skunks, possims, racoons, turkeys, squirrels, garden snakes, box turtles, snapping tutles, several different types of frogs, and an army of bugs. Bear have become a problem in some areas of the state.

No way I'll try to catch a racoon or possum... I figure they're fast enough to avoid traffic anyway. Roger Allen wrote: I am not a spider fan. I went running recently with a friend of mine and his dog Spark. We were crossing a bridge, and Spark swung wide around a crack in the pavement. Oblivious, I just ran over it. My friend started laughing. He called me back to the crack. Lying in the crack was an Ohio black rat snake (non-poisonous), about 1.25 inches in diameter and about 4 ft long. We have a lot of old railroad beds in the area that have been converted into bike paths. It's not uncommon to see snakes sunning themselves on the paths. Fortunately, almost all of the snakes in Ohio are harmless.

The wildlife where I life (west London area) contains rabbits and foxes, but is clearly dominated by nocturnal species such as petty criminals, not-so-petty ones, drunken teenagers and not-so-teenaged drunkards. Or, fly-tippers and rats are also pretty common. Bernd :-)

I don't really like the spiders either, and I meet a lot of the small ones in our apartment. I don't like to kill or crush them as well, I usually throw them out of the window (it's 13th floor :) ) or flush them down the toilet. But I really liked the snakes and such when I was a child. I've spent most of my childhood in the woods so that's why. I still love the mountains and woods, and especially the large old trees. :) Rado

I found a small snake (about 4 inches long and 1/4" in diameter in my garage. I got a stick to nudge the snake out and, I could not believe it, the darn thing opened its mouth wide and hissed at me before slithering outside. Steve

Having looked at your links, I revise my estimate and think was in fact a slow worm. I did consider the option at the time, but didn't really know how different they are. This specimin was very silver in colour. Whats interesting is that the previous accident it had had, could be down to a predator and it "dropping its tail".
