RAM and laptop question

Hi! I'm thinking about changing my desktop computer for a laptop. Most of them have 512MB of RAM and my current computer has 1GB of RAM. Updating to 1GB is quite expensive for laptops. Here's my question: does the amount of RAM has a huge effect as far as developping goes? Would it affect the compiling and liking portions or it's mostly the CPU speed that matters (I'd go from a P4 2.4 to a 2.8). The only time I actually need more memory is when I use VMWare or when doing some graphic design... I'm thinking about getting a Dell, but if anyone here has another suggestion for a laptop that might be more oriented for developper, feel free to let me know!!! Luke, see this[^] thread. I recommend Dell because they're sturdy, good performers, and have the largest (and very sharp) screens. I decided to get a Dell 8600 (Pentium-M) vs. a 9100 with a Pentium-4 that has a higher clock speed. I'd recommending getting as much RAM as you can afford. One trick is to buy the machine with a single 256M chip and add a 512M chip yourself. You could later sell the 256M chip on EBay and swap it for another 512M. I've always preferred IBM Thinkpad T series, purely a personal preference because the Dell touchpads drive me up the wall. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

I've so far bought 2 printers, a graphics card, a laptop, and a digital camera using their ratings, and every single one has been a real gem. Have a look at Toshiba Tecra or IBM machines, but those with a Pentium M processor. The only laptops I know which still perform when a compiler (and maybe a database) is loaded. A 1.8 GHz Pentium M feels like a 3Ghz P4, but gives you much longer uptime and less heat and noise. IMO 512M are enough, give it a try, you can always add more (make sure you got a free memory slot left) dirk
