Give me an F; give me a U; ... give me a BTopenworld Anytime

Most of you will know by now that I strongly dislike British Telecom. Well now the service I'm getting from them is so bad that I am forced to switch ISP's yet again. However, I am willing to give them one more chance - not because I like them, but because the price is right. Can anyone answer me a few simple questions about BTopenworld Anytime? 1] Is this service also illegally limited and obstructed as has been the case with their SurfTime package? I.e. if they see you are a heavy user, they deliberately generate noise on your line and randomly disconnect you and prevent dial up for 19 out of every 20 attempts? * 2] Do they disconnect you every 2 hours (mean that it isn't truly unmetered and unlimited)? If the answer to either of these two is "no", then I am switching my line to NTL. At least they promise ADSL in my area by the end of 2002, without having to pay ridiculous amounts of money. * Note that they frequently disconnect you after about five seconds, so you have to pay for a full minute at full charges of 4.5p (no call discounts applicable). I pay around 50p a day just trying to get a connection that will last long enough for me to download my email at home. I have had to get into the habbit of using a download resumer for all files I downlaod, even if they are only a few hundred kb. :(( I tell you, as soon as I get enough money together, I am moving to the USA. I don't care if they are all arrogant bastards - at least the bandwidth and reliablity is there for the most part. (Not to mention that just about everything is cheaper over there.) [edit] And as if their normal level of service isn't poor enough, I've just had to attempt to dial in fourteen times (yes, 14, I log them all), and as I was halfway through correcting my numerous spelling mistakes, when guess what – they killed the connection again. I moved a few months ago to freeserve, and have not looked back. I'm still on Surftime, but its cheaper than BT Internet\Openworld, and they don't disconnect you every 2 hours. I also seem to have a faster connection (10%-20%) which I'm not complaining about. Probably going to get though ADSL next year. When I moved over, Freeserve were fine, but BT dragged their feet big time. I canceled, and five days later they said all done, except they charged me for the next 6 weeks. BT said it was BT internets problem, and BT internet said it was BT's. Nice how they decide to be different companies when they owe the customer money. They then said, if I did not pay my bill I would be cut off, but that they would pay me back after 3 months - why just not rebill me the correct amount now????:confused: I'm telling you, the customer services people their should all be taken out and shot. For our freinds across the water, its not the connection speeds(ok, the countries ADSL backbone was broken today), but that the telco's can get away with so much:mad: :mad: Anyway, come the revolution, they will get what they deserve - the sack.:) Giles

I moved a few months ago to freeserve, and have not looked back. I'm still on Surftime, but its cheaper than BT Internet\Openworld, and they don't disconnect you every 2 hours. I also seem to have a faster connection (10%-20%) which I'm not complaining about. Probably going to get though ADSL next year. Whoa - I was (until this morning) using Freeserve Hometime (that is the dialup package Freeserve offer that takes advantage of BT's SurfTime package) - which I presume is what you have, yet they cut me off every 2 hours on the dot (assuming the connection lasted that long). :confused: (They never advertsied this fact though - and it was BT limiting the service, not Freeserve - I only found out after talking with a customer service girl, when I complained my downloads kept getting cut off. If you're in an ntl: cabled area try a 512K cable modem. In Leicestershire, I'm usingo ne and they're great. Always on etc etc. It plugs into your TV line, not your phone line, so you will have to subscribe to at least the basic TV package. £14ish pm for basic TV package + £25 pm for cable modem. The service has gone down for three or four hours a few times, but the download speeds of between 80K - 300K (300K rare) on average are great. Jeremy Davis http://www.astad.org

I had a friend who was always saying 'Come the revolution'. I tried to explain to hime that when the day comes that he's paying 40 percent tax, he would start thinking a bit differently. Anyway, he's not managed to get himself a decent job yet, despite being quite a bright bloke. Giles
