They seem to be a load of blokes who want to have an excuse to get away from there wives. Quite secretive and stuff and things, but everyone knows they just go drinking on the cheep at the lodge. A bit like a golf club, except you have to stand on one leg, or something stupid to join, after people have decided you can join by placing one of two colour snooker/pool balls in a blank bag. Yes that will scare them and make them sweat. So.......Hassan.........why are the CIA invesigating the Free Masons? There is also the Magic Circle and Stone Cutters. Hommer happens to be a member of the later if memory serves me correctly. Ahhh, I feel a song coming on from that episode.......'We do! we do!". Giles

It's quite a bit deeper than that. You must be related to someone to be able to join, and they have to invite you to join on top of that. Then, there's a significant indoctrination process during which you must commit a significant amount of information to memory. After that, you buy a special ring, and learn the secret handshake.
