I like linux.. but what bugs me is the fact that there are no *really* good development enviornments. Now a true *nix person would go on at me about how Vi is all you need but I would respond with one word "productivity"... it usually shuts them up. Anyway... Have you come across any good IDE's Lauren? Regards, Brian Dela :-) http://www.briandela.com IE 6 required.

Borland Enterprise Studio[^] Eclipse[^] (although C++ is currently a bit limited, the Java support is amazing) KDevelop[^] I must admit to still using Vi though... (and no, my productivity doesn't suck!)

I find Eclipse to be too slow and finicky.. Have never tried Borland but I must give it a go if I can get my hands on it and KDevelop is just plain crap (lack of decent integreted help, fast auto-completition etc) Regards, Brian Dela :-) http://www.briandela.com IE 6 required.

Great idea! We're talking about retraining a 76-year old lady who is terrified by computers... Hell, I can't even make those suckers work, and I'm something of an expert around here. Try sometime to explain the differences among browsers to someone who has trouble setting the timer on a toasteroven... Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

My mom never knows if she's using IE or Mozilla Firefox: All she knows is that she's "on the Internet", and everything is fine. We are the ones who know the difference, common people only click on links, favorites and back. Due to technical difficulties my previous signature, "I see dumb people" will be off until further notice. Too many people were thinking I was talking about them... :sigh:

ok so now i have kde 3.2 running on a debian distro using kernel 2.4.26 with apache and mysql both auto-starting with the os i just installed kword and the gimp and i have to say this absolutely rocks considering its all running quite happily and usably on a p2@266 with 160mb ram and a 4gb hdd ... add to that the fact that im immune to 99% of viruses and spyware etc etc and it makes me real happy this whole experience is really turning out to be a major eye opener :)

Cool!:-D Answer me one. Years ago I bought Mom a device that plugs in to the phone and connects to MSN - Web Companion, I think it was called. They stopped making it, MS stopped supporting it, and it is slowly dying as web standards evolve. I've got spare hardware & Linux, but she doesn't want to deal with a computer. If there's a Linux-compatible browser that looks and feels like IE (she's used to the MSN Explorer routine now), I'd like to know where to get it. I can build her a Linux box that will sit quietly in the corner without obviously being a PC and let her play on the web and send emails. You know of any such animal? BTW - You mentioned a return visit before... Any timeframe in mind yet? Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I'll bet if you tell her that Mozilla (or konqueror) is the new look of IE she will believe you. Not that I recomend lieing, but I think this is more in your head. It might take a few minutes to get used to the differences, but that should be it. The hard part is likely to be moving all her old bookmarks over.

Great :) My Linux laptop still refuses to use the external monitor with a resolution of 1280x1024. I always get the same resolution (1024x986) on both screens. Have you found a solution for this problem, or did it not occur at all? I run SuSE 9.1.

hmmmmmm i only use the built in 1024x768 display ... i will be putting it on my sony when it comes back from repair and then i want 1600x1200 i think if u mess with the X86Config-4 type files u can list the modes and monitors and switch between them ... its definitely possible :)

I was in a similiar situation with my grandmother. I just downloaded an IE skin for Mozilla and she couldnt even notice the difference between Mozilla and Internet Explorer. Signature under construction.
