This has always bothered me. How it is done? The wood and the graphite seem so tightly matched -- how do they get it in there? Dr Herbie Remember, half the people out there have below average IQs.

Oh, let's see: they make a mustard ball and batter the hole into the egg...? Now I'm getting confused. How did they get the toothpaste into the tube again? Bernd :-O

Trained bora (wood beetles) wearing small metal rings around their abdomens are introduced to a pencil shaped piece of wood. A high intensity magnetic field is used to sense the bora's location and guide them through the centre of the dowel. The filings from the beetle's diggings remain in the newly drilled pencil and are converted to graphite by an X-Ray frequency laser. Of course this method was not used historically, because the bora were unionised. :)

But why can't you see the seam? Surely when you sharpen a pencil you should be able to see that join between the two bits of wood! I have decided that pencils are made my magic and that any supposed photos are actually faked (possibly as April Fools Day jokes). :) Dr Herbie Remember, half the people out there have below average IQs.

The wood is in two pieces with a groove down the middle. The lead/graphite is laid, not poured, in the groove, and the two pieces are then glued together.

Dr Herbie wrote: But why can't you see the seam? You can if the color of the two pieces is contrasting enough. Also, if the grain of the two pieces is not running in the same direction, sharpening the pencil will result in a rough half and a smooth half.

I saw a kids program on this fairly recently. The wood is actually in 2 parts with a groove down the middle A thin graphite rod is placed in the groove and the 2 parts stuck together The wood is then cut into pencil lengths and sharpened. Jeeves helped me find this page[^]
