As a Scotsman in New York I don't get bank holidays, but it is Memorial day! So beach for me and the wife (a concept that never sprung to mind in Aberdeen). Gary

Apparently Aberdeen isn't bad for surfing. Mind you, they don't look very cosy. Gavin Greig "Haw, you're no deid," girned Charon. "Get aff ma boat or ah'll report ye." Matthew Fitt - The Hoose O Haivers: The Twelve Trauchles O Heracles.

What are all the UK CPians up to this long weekend? :jig: I see that, in accordance to British tradition, rain is expected on Monday, but even that can't get me down. Now - how to get through the rest of this sunny afternoon while chained to a desk?

What is this "long weekend" concept? :) We take very few public holidays, but have them added to our holiday allowance. I'm not even sure if there is a public holiday up here (Scotland), I haven't checked. As it happens, tomorrow I expect to be confirming that someone looks like their ID papers (for their Thawte e-mail certificate) and I'll meet friends for lunch (visiting from as far afield as California and even Glasgow). We're the same here. The public holidays are added to our annual entitlement and we take them as holidays if we want. And it is a public holiday here in Scotland but whether you get it off depends on where you work. Some only give the beginning of the month off, some this one and the really lucky people get both. If I had a better memory I would remember more.

Sounds like I should move to Scotland! That would be far more useful :)

It is except when you have to keep 5 days for the week between christmas and new year because the office is being closed and you have no choice but not to work. Not that don't like holidays, I just hate being told when to take them. If I had a better memory I would remember more.

I'm feeling very tempted to just drop-kick the recalcitrant Windows CE device I'm 'working' with into the nearest waste receptacle and drive home very fast indeed. Why did Microsoft decide to replace the crappy but mostly-working Platform Manager with the absolutely shocking device connection transport used in Visual Studio 2003? My life is filled with working with the most shoddy tools imaginable (if you disregard vi and emacs). eVC 3.0 and 4.0 are incompatible, Compact Framework blows chunks (can't wait for v2.0), ActiveSync can't remember who you are from one moment to the next, AARGH!!! Uh, I think I need my medication... Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

Well, this U.S. CPian has the following planned - Saturday - Work in the yard. We moved into a new house last year, but didn't have time to work on the back yard. The right hand side is full of miscellaneous bushes, brush, and out-of-control ground cover. I want to neaten that up. Side note: After the massive thunderstorms that came through the area last night, I've also got lots of branches to clean up. Sunday - Finish work in the yard. Finish getting my bicycle cleaned up (my last tour I rode, I got asphalt all over it after riding through some tar and chip). Monday - In the morning, my daughter and I are running the Lou Cox Memorial 5K[^]. This will be my tenth year running it, and Celeste's third. The rest of the day: pure, unadulterated laziness. Unless I actually do get the bike cleaned up on Sunday, and the weather's nice. If that's the case, then I think a ride is in order :).

Spending some time with my family :) I'm then spending Monday night driving from Nottingham to Uxbridge, hoping to find the B&B I'm booked into, and looking forward to starting my new contract on Tuesday. Having not worked at all in May, this allegedly sunny afternoon doesn't worry me ;) Steve S Developer for hire
