I've seen the GOP harp on it with Clinton in office, ditto the Demos with Bush in. No doubt both groups would bitch about it if Nader got the nod. I believe there's 1M barrels a day going in, wtih something like 650,000M barrels already stored. Ever wonder what would happen if terrorist dropped a match down that particular hole? I used to work for the SPR (Strategic Petroleum Reserve). Basically, I was told there was enough oil in there (read: more than one location) to keep the entire country going for 2-3 months without any imports. Jeremy Falcon

      ~700m barrels at roughly 20m / day = 35 days. :sigh: Software | Cleek

Well, it's also been a year since I've worked there, so I should qualify that with an "at the time" I reckon. :) Jeremy Falcon

our consumption has gone up pretty significantly, too... even from that 20m/day number (from 2002). damn, we're hooked on the stuff. Software | Cleek

The maximum rate at which oil can be pumped from the reserve is 4.3m bpd[^]. So I guess we have 700 / 4.3 = 162 days

Well according to this[^], in 2003 623 million barrels would last us two months. And, this was after the 2002 20 mbd estimate. Jeremy Falcon

calculator war! :) In 2003, 628 million barrels provide 54 days of net import protection. that only accounts for 11.5mb/day. i wonder if they're including domestic production as an offset. either way, we'd be fucked. Software | Cleek
