Security Update for Windows XP (KB840374) Windows automatic update says I need this update. So, I say go ahead and download/install it. Soon, another update seems to appear and so I download it. After repeating this several times in the last couple of weeks, the update number started looking familiar. I write it down and sure enough, it's back to be installed. So, I head out to the Windows Update site and look at my update history and it says that I've tried to install this on my machine a total of 9 times this month and each time the installation failed. How or why, I have no idea. So, once more I go out to the update site and try to install it again. It downloads and installs and then comes up with a message box saying that the installation is complete. No message of the status of the installation, just that it's done. I check and it has failed again. Anyone have any idesa as to what I should do or why it might have failed? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks, Mike

I had the same problem, I ended up downloading the update and installing it manually and wow and behold it told me i had insufficient space to install the update. You would think the would log this to the event log besides saying it failed.

The Windows Update file that was downloaded may be damaged - I recall an article that describes how to delete the offending files and try again but can't locate it right now - a manual update will probably also fix things... Steve

Thanks. I'll have to try that. Isn't it wonderful the feedback you get from these things. You would think that a failure would actually be logged and the reason as well, but I guess that would be expecting too much.

Okay. Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try and see what happens. I can't really see why a manual download and install would be different, but then if these things made sense, then it would all be quite easy to figure out!! :-D Thanks again!

I had a similar problem with an update. After manually downloading and running the setup, it still got an error. I ended up running it with a command line switch to skip some action (I think it was backing up files that it would replace), and it worked. :|

Thanks for the help. Manually downloading and installing seem to be a great place to start. I manually downloaded the setup and ran it. Finally I was told what the problem was!! It couldn't run the cryptographical service (or something like this) so I go and check that. Sure enough, it isn't started. I try to start it and it tells me that it can't start because it had an exception accessing some part of memory. I think it's time to pull all of my data off and rebuild the machine. Thanks again!
