OK, I know many of you here use laptops and a good variety of them. Given that I cannot make up my mind, I'm going to ask you good people to do it for me! I have been looking at the Compaq AMD64-based R3000Z and the Dell Inspiron 9100 (the XPS only ships with a 1900x1200 screen and that is too tiny for me and I don't want to up the DPI setting). So, given these requirements, please spend my money and tell me why! Intel: 3.0 Ghz w/ HT and above AMD: (don't know too much about these CPUs ... would want speed similar to the Intel above) RAM: 1 GB Screen: WSXGA+ (1600x1200) Graphics 64MB+, dedicated if possible Sound: Don't really care HD: 60+ GB. The Compaq only has 4200 rpm, the Dell I can get a 7200 rpm. This will be used mainly for development. But, it absolutely HAS to play Doom 3. Assuming iD ever finish it. I know this is an oft-repeated and boring thread, but I just cannot make up my mind. Budget is up to $2500 USD. Alienware is not an option! Thanks. P.S. So far the Compaq is about $2,050 and the Dell $2,450 with configured options.

I'd go with the Dell. They have good service and support. All of our HP's (consumed Compaq, BTW) have gone back at least once for stupid repairs like a loose A/C plug. I also like the Dells because they don't give you a byte-for-byte restoration CD set like HP does - they build an OEM installation of Windows + drivers the right way, making it easy to reinstall (if necessary) without having to install a bunch of crap that you'll just end up removing anyway. I find the price difference a little odd, but maybe HP just plans on making that difference up in repairs. Besides, it's your money, so I don't have to worry about spending an extra $400! :) Whatever you do, don't get a Gateway. I'm not necessarily saying their new laptops suck, but one of my interns had some problems with one and support was a BIG joke! They had it for 3 months and sent it back worse than before (the batteries wouldn't take a charge at all now and the hard drive that was failing had failed completely). He sent it back for anothe 1 month. They finally replaced the drive but said he had to replace the batteries himself. Oh yeah - before he sent it in the first time, the laptop was only about 2 months old (new). The whole while he was calling them and getting the run-around. If they can't figure out the problem in a couple weeks, they should've just replaced it. Sorry, but the "cow" is dead.

Thanks Heath. It's funny you should say that about the Dell install. Whatever I get I pretty much plan on formatting the drive and doing "my" install anyway. I have had good experiences with Dell in the past, but just wanted to see what else was out there - mainly because I have been reading horror stories about the Hitachi LCDs that were being shipped with the Dells if you chose the WSXGA+ screen, which I plan on doing. If Dell can assure me that I'll get the Samsung screen, then I'll probably get one! Cheers, Andrew

its a shame really. Gateway started out by being one of the first companies to provide good price and good service in the very early 90's. Now they are a shell of what they were.

Just to add a foot-note to your remarks re: Gateway. Up until recent, our company used Gateway as our primary source for laptop computers. The machines we have all seem to be fine, no real issues to complain about; however, we were recently informed that "On-site Service" actually means "We send you the parts, and you install them yourself, 'on-site'; not that we actually send someone out to your place of business to do the repair 'on-site' for you ..." I'm not going to debate what people believe the words "on-site service/repair" to mean; I just know what I perceive "on-site service" as being ... and it's NOT "Do it yourself". Just thought I'd share that info. D.

Always go with the Dell. Gateway = BAD BAD BAD. Hp used to be a good alternative, but since they sucked up Compaq the virus has spread and they suck too now. On a side note, I need a new computer badly and I can't keep my eyes off of the new Apple Powerbooks...The Dark Side calls to me...I think if I buy a new one I may be looking seriously into a Mac. Ah... funny you should ask. :) Regardless of which machine you end up buying, try to get one with a fast hard drive (7200 rpm) and a fast front end bus. Today, CPU speed is not the best indicator of performance. You may want to consider getting a "slower" Pentium M processor as opposed to a high speed Pentium 4. I strongly recommend the Dell 8600, which I bought last weekend. I paid $1700 for mine: WUXGA 1920x1200, 256M (I added 512M from Circuit City - much cheaper than Dell), 60G 7200rpm. I saved some bucks by getting WinXP Home and upgraded to XP Pro using my MSDN DVDs. Dell's service is pretty impressive - I mistakenly ordered a floppy drive, and when I changed my mind, they sent someone from UPS to pick it up at no cost to me. Also, I haven't seen any other manufacturer (IBM included) who makes it so darn easy to reinstall your OS with all the right drivers. The usual free shipping and no sales tax (in MA) made the 8600 an easy choice. Good luck, and let us know what you end up getting! /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Articles | Freeware | Music ravib@ravib.com

That budget can get you a verrrrrry sweeeeeet machine :) Personally I have an Inspiron 5150. For Laptops, my biggest issue is memory and hard drive speed along with net connectivity. I don't personally think laptops are there yet for gaming because of the LCD monitors so I wouldnt worry much about the video card. So here are my recommendations: Processor: Intel 3 GHz HT RAM: 1GB Screen: WSXGA+ (15") Graphics: 64MB (Nvidia or ATI) HD: 60GB 7200 rpm Network: Wireless (802.11 b/g) + 10/100 Eth. Coming from a desktop machine I couldn't do without a 7200 rpm Hard Drive. If you are going with Dell, I've been told the latitude series is more rugged than the Inspirons so you may want to check that out. Also be sure to pay attention to the Front Side bus speed. The more the merrier :). Another thing to note is that if you are going to run Win XP on your lappy, then u better get more than 512MB of RAM if you want to have a nice smooth experience when doing your work. My only complaint with Dell is that their memory prices are too much! I bought my Inspiron 5150 with 256MB PC2700 RAM and then bought 2 512MB chips from Crucial[^] after. I keep that 256MB chip incase anything goes wrong while I'm on the road. You never know. I'm sure you will have change when you're done with your config, I was on a budget of $1500 and had to push it by $200. Try to monitor dell's page though cause they have sales and stuff especially when public holidays come around. You should see some pretty nice prices around the July 4th holiday as well. .:. Keno .:.

How about Sager? I own a 4780 and it is an excellent laptop. And the nice thing is, Sager's are actually manufactured by Clevo, the same company that manufactures Alienware computers. Here are the interesting highlights: 17" WXGA Active Matrix Display (can't meet you resolution requirements, but the screen is larger) Intel® Pentium® 4 3.2(800MHz FSB) Processor 256 MB 400MHz PC3200 DDR [Expandable to 2048 MB] 40.0/60.0/80.0 GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive Integrated TV-Tuner with Remote CMOS Video Camera 6-in-1 Card Reader ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600 PRO 128MB DDR 6 Channel Analog Audio output 1 Type II PCMCIA Slot Infra Red, Wireless Fast IR interface USB 2.0 Ports Firewire Port (4 PIN) Optional Internal 802.11b Wi-Fi Wirless LAN Module Their support is also excellent. Always do a google search for Dell Coupons if you go with them. Right now you can get an additional 150 off with a coupon until 6-9-04. 200 if you get an expensive one. That's over and above the dell deals they offer which already includes 150 off the 9100's. I had a 15wsxga 3.2ht 7200rpm 60 gig 1gig mem comfigured for 17something tonight. Now to just figure how to pay for it... ;)
