Vaio Laptop Problem - Anyone seen this before?

Have you scanned for a virus/spyware to check you're not infected ? Are you running a firewall ?
Yes, I have virus detection S/W and have SpyBot 1.3. I don't believe that a virus would cause my computer to just go into a hibernation mode, wouldn't it be more destructive? As far as firewall, I'm behind a H/W firewall, two switches/routers to a cable modem.

Not necessarily. However, as you have A/V software, then it's unlikely you have a virus. I recall a similar problem, but cannot remember the details. I'll have a look around and let you know what I find.

I'm having a problem with my Sony VAIO laptop. Even though I have the power settings for a couple of different profiles set for the AC (plugged in) settings as never hibernate, it periodically goes into hibernation. Now, I've never witnessed it firsthand, thought it was one of my kids, and on one or two occasions, I verified that the actual power (AC) to my home went out, but it has happened way too many times to be a power outage. And, my kids swear they haven't touched my laptop. Here's another wierd thing. Though, I never lose my work or applications that are opened it seems to revert back to an earlier state for several applications regardless of whether they are in use at the time of hibernation. For example, I disable script debugging within IE, have a slightly different server setting for logging into my email account from Outlook, and my last saved power setting as mentioned before is for "never" hibernate. But, upon coming out of hibernation, my IE script debugging setting is unchecked, my Outlook connection to server settings reverts back to an older state and my power settings revert back to "hibernate after 30 mins.". Wierd, I can't figure out what's causing it. I am using Windows XP Home Edition. Any thoughts? BTW, I leave it powered on to record some streaming audio radio programs over the net via a scheduler program and when it hibernates I don't get my recordings made.
I suspect its doing a suspend to ram. Sony uses an additional power control panel in linux, so that mite be the issue here, look in the bios. Or install the sony software. top secret xacc-ide 0.0.1

Check the BIOS settings. Power Management can be done by Windows or by the BIOS, or both. In some systems the two compete with awful results, but both can be shut off. I prefer to disable both, but if you want to enable power saving features it's better to let Windows do it and to disable the built-in BIOS ACPI functions. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Okay. Thanks for the suggestions but I still don't know if it's fixed. I found out how to access the BIOS but there's really no power /ACPM setting except for CPU performance. I also found a control panel type of application called, "Sony Notebook Setup". There is no settingS for power/ACPM. Hmmmmm....

Get the hint? Restart the thing normally, and that should "clear" the hibernated state that it seems to be caught in. :) top secret xacc-ide 0.0.1

The bottom of the thing does get kind of warm. I usually put it on my Lazy-Boy recliner's armrest or on the floor on a pile of papers (yeah, messy. I know) I think you might be right. I just left for a couple of hours today, came back and it had put itself into hibernation. I've also seen one hard drive error in the last month after power-up...meaning that it did not shut down gracefully. Also, ever since I've got that Total Recorder s/w it installs/uses an itermediary driver between Windows and my sound card driver, I've gotten some of those "Do you want to send a " report or something kind of errors on power-up and they always say that a driver was the cause. Regardless, I still think the forced hibernation may be a heat issue. I guess, I should look into buying one of those laptop fans that mount to the bottom of your laptop, any suggestions?
