My PCs main hard disk just locked up making some very bad clicking noises. Turning off and on seems to have fixed it (so far). All my sensitive stuff is already backed up, but in the process of copying off all my non-essential bits n pieces that I want to keep. Hopefully it will live long enough to do it. So if things go bad, it may be a while before I get to post again. :( Roger Allen - Sonork 100.10016 Strong Sad: I am sad I am flying Who is your favorite Strong?

I got our IT guy to run his eye over my system. Apart from the CounterStrike install he didn't think there should be any problems. Mind you, he wasn't there when the hard drive only gave out clicking noises. Lots of scans etc turned up no defects. Roger Allen - Sonork 100.10016 Strong Sad: I am sad I am flying Who is your favorite Strong?

Once the HDD starts clicking it's only a matter of time before it stops working. It always starts off sporadic, but the clicking will only become more frequent over time. After that, it'll stop working at all. It's a hardware issue, not software. So, if he's scanning for sectors, etc. he's barking up the wrong tree. It's time to consider a new HDD (and maybe a new IT guy too :)). Jeremy Falcon

That's EXACTLY what two hard disks of mine did just before seizing up entirely. (This happened in the mid-90s. They were 4GB fast wide SCSI drives, one Seagate, one Quantum. The amazing part: each cost $1200. Both were replaced under warranty and I sold them a few years back on ebay for $40 each.) My main HD on my home PC started slowing dramatically and issued the occassional "click" 2 weeks ago. I quick copied all the important information to CD. I've only used it sporadically since. The replacement is due to be delivered today. P.S. The failing HD is the last of a string of Maxtor drives that have failed for me in the last few years. IBM Travelstar HD’s are known to make a lot of noise and there is a flash upgrade that will silence them fairly quickly. Unfortunately the label on a HD often is not even a clue on who actually made. Welcome to the global economy. Some quick thoughts. “Clicking” or “snapping” is the read write head moving out and back into park position rapidly. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not good for the drive health. “bumble bee buzzing” a loud angry sound is usually a bearing dieing. You will soon have bad things within minutes or hours. “Screech” or “Scratching” sounds indicate that the read/write heads have touched down and you have a nice paper weight (date usually unrecoverable except in a clean room). “Whirring” or “light buzzing” is normal for fast drive access. Laptops due to cooling issues are becoming more and more the victims of heat induced hard disk failures. This is literally of epidemic proportions in Dell 5K and 8K series lap tops. Thermal management seems to be a lost art. There are only two or three moving parts that make noise in a hard drive. Read/write heads move on the armature, and the motor drives the disks. Systems tools that allow you to monitor CPU and HD temps are a good thing for laptops. -------------------- Sam

When I worked in tech support there were some western digital hard drives that would do that until you gave them a little "tap" on the side every once in a while to remind them you still cared.

Could be the time to pop in a replacement drive and use that as backup. They are cheap and the peace of mind can be worth it ;) Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com
