My new chain.
-
I've worn one for about four-five years now. Not an entire 'mala' but just one strung on a chain. Are you planning on wearing this (I'm guessing no) or just keeping it with you ? "I believe I referred to her personality as a potential science exhibit." - Elaine, about Ellen, in "The Dog"
I am planning to wear it often, though not on a regular basis. I am a non-vegetarian. I have heard that non-vegetarians are not supposed to wear them. But none of the websites I referred to say anything abt it. They even say, there aren't any directions written in the ancient docs regarding this. Anyway, since I don't have any plans to be a total vegetarian and for some other reasons, I might have to restrict myself from wearing it always! Sounds like a lovely gift :) Perhaps you should get Nish to photo it, so you can show it to us. Sounds very interesting - I'm especially intrigued by "My grand uncle is a saint and has his "ashram" in North India". What exactly does this mean? Sounds like he must be an interesting person to know!

Meg's World - Blog PhotographyHi Megan, I will try and get Nish to take a photograph of it and send you an image. My grand uncle is a spiritual guru. The word ashram means the abode of a saint. Though he is my grand uncle, I only call him Swamiji which basically means "Reverend Guru". It is very interesting to listen to him talk about Hindu philosophy. Hi all, My granduncle presented me with a Rudraksha mala [a Rudraksha chain] yesterday. It constitutes of Rudraksha beads tied in gold. My grand uncle is a saint and has his "ashram" in North India. He uses his Rudraksha chain for meditation. The Rudraksha beads are obtained from Rudraksha trees from The Himalayas. The Rudraksha beads are known to enhance health, luck, prosperity, peace of mind and a lot of other good things. It supposedly regulates blood pressure, mental stress etc. The beads are considered to be divine and the name derives from "Rudra" which is Lord Shiva and "aaksha" meaning tear. The seeds in my chain are orange-brown in color and so it makes a good ornament too. :) BTW, this site[^] gives a lot of info on Rudrakshas. Cheers, Smitha Every problem has a gift for you in its hands. -- Richard Bach
Smitha All that grand-uncle is a saint with an ashramam stuff will convince westerners that the stereotype image they see of Indians in movies/books is true :-) Nish

In North India there ARE lots of ashrams especially in Gujarat and holy places like Rishikesh, Haridwar etc. Just that the whole of India is not filled with ashrams and rishis :) And there is another thing. People here have wrong ideas abt western countries as well. Smitha Every problem has a gift for you in its hands. -- Richard Bach

Most people here think that western familes don't show any attachment towards each other and that they don't value family ties etc. I was quite surprised on a few occasions initially, when I found westerners showing love/affection towards grandparents, uncles etc which I thought was a purely eastern thing. Some surprises are nice :) Nish

I'm a non vegetarian too. That's why I've worn it off and on last five years. Some people warned me about wearing it and being careless about your food habits. I slackened after awhile (a few months of wearing it) and then I broke my hand ! They were probably mutually exclusive events. I was in college at that time in a remote place (Pilani in Rajasthan) and I got screwed with poor treatment and wearing the cast in all that heat and all. Nowadays if I ever wear it I wear it for a period of time like two months during which I'm careful about my habits. Since you sound like you care about it .. I'd say removing it only during meals is not a good idea. I'd rather just keep it in your pooja room or something. Just removing the mala during meals is certianly a bad idea. So I think as you do, I'd rather have good food habits while I wear it. Smitha Every problem has a gift for you in its hands. -- Richard Bach
