What Partitioning Software do you use?

I'm getting a little bit fed up with having to upgrade my copy of Partition Magic most every time MS releases a new version of Windows. I use PM maybe once or twice a year, which probably makes it the most costly program I own. Upgrades are nearly as much as the full product, which doesn't help, especially here in OZ. So I'm wondering what Partition software others are using and/or recomend? Anyone using V Communications Partition Commander for example? I'm about to get a new Notebook with Win XP which I'll need to partition, hence the post. Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows. Well I would say PM if you don't have to pay for it. Otherwise the built-in Windows partion utility does the trick in most cases. It may no longer be true but it uses a "lite" version of PM apparently. Just go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and then Disk Management. It works pretty well. FDisk truly sucks though. The number of times I have gone dilly with that programme is phenomenall! regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa Do you Sonork? So far all I've used is a large hammer and copious quantities of coffee (and that was on a good day...) :omg: The only other one I know of is Ranish Partition Manager. I've heard it's pretty good, although you need a big of knowledge to drive it, and I don't think it handles NTFS volumes yet. :( Worth keeping one eye on though. Get BootItNG from www.terabyteunlimited.com . It handles multi-boot configurations for up to 4 partitions per hard drive and also includes a partition tool that works well. The one time cost is $29.95 with free upgrades. Ed

I use FDISK. It's free and simple. I have a linux distro that has a graphical "data safe" partioner that comes up durning installation but I don't know if they have a win32 release or not. I think they were planning on releasing one.

Hi Paul, Thanks for that. I wasn't aware that you could do partitioning in Windows itself. On my current XP Desktop the New Partition command is disabled, but that's probably because there isn't any unused space to create a partition. I'm assuming this won't be an issue on my new Notebook when it arrives. I couldn't see any way of resizing partitions. I guess MS don't want to destroy all of Powerquests market.;) I've also been toying with using NTFS and Dynamic partitions, but for some reason MS doesn't support this on Notebooks. I'll probably want to run Win98 as well, so sticking with FAT32 makes sense for now. Thanks to everyone for their advice. Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows. I have both Partition Commander and Partition Magic at home. My first experience was with PM4 (sucked big time), but PM6 seems very stable and works with Win2K. Do any of them work with WinXP yet? (That is, actually load onto a XP parition?) If you are starting with an empty drive, then I can recommend either (I think PC has a better UI), but if you are installing on existing data, then PM has less limitations. PC requires a Win9x/DOS readable partition as the first one on the drive you are partitioning, which is a big problem if you have WinNT/2k installed there already.
