Best place to stay in London...

My wife and I are considering a trip to London in mid-June and have been looking into purchasing our plane tickets and hotel reservations. We have never visited London and would like to know if anyone could suggest a nice, moderately priced hotel in a good location. Thanks, Matt Gullett PS. Any suggestions for the best things to see/do would be appreciated.

Matt Gullett wrote: We have never visited London and would like to know if anyone could suggest a nice, moderately priced hotel in a good location. This is London, England you are talking about? "Nice", "Moderately priced" and "good location" are not usually in the same sentence when describing a London hotel. It does happen, but it is rare. Your best option, IMO, is to look for a deal in a travel brochure. Sorry that the following is a sort of negative advice (along the lines of what to avoid than what to do) I would also suggest you don't pick a hotel room that goes for less than £50 per night or you'll end up in a hotel that may do better renting the rooms by the hour. (If you get my meaning) I once tried getting hotel rooms at Heathrow Airport because they were cheaper for the quality, but this was a false economy. For a start the "courtesy bus" costs money (£2.50 each way as I recall!! [for no more than a 10 minute journey]), and the cost of getting in and out of the centre of London is very expensive. However, this is not so bad if you are going to set yourself up for a few days, visit London for a couple and then hire a car and explore the area to the (south/north-)west of London. Windsor and Legoland are only 30 mins west from Heathrow airport. Things to do in London: The theater (you can get tickets on the day from many vendors in Lecester Square, or you can pre-book and many hotels will have a booking service). I always enjoy the Science Museum. The London Eye is supposed to be good but I've never been on it. You can visit Buckhingham Palace in the summer when the Queen moves to her Scottish holiday residence. Actually - you might be able to pick up some ideas reading through the forum on the Spring 2004 EuroCPian[^] page. I hope some of this helps.

last fall I went to the Regent Palace Hotel London[^] huge hotel, right off piccadilly circus, only drawback, is that they have shared showers/bathrooms, but were quite clean. As for what to do, well, walking around and getting lost is a good way to see some places that you would'nt find otherwise ... I also did a boat tour on the thames up to greenwich.

I'd try http://www.laterooms.com[^] if I were you. The Britannia International in Canary Wharf (E14) is nice, a little bit out of the way, but only a short walk to the tube line (takes you pretty much straight to the West End in 15 minutes) and there's lots to do (well, eat and drink) in CW. Or the London Bridge Hotel - near London Bridge station - both on opposite sides of London to Heathrow - about 40 minutes in a taxi (with no traffic...) and about £30-40 I think. Both 4* Both reasonably central. Though both about £90 per night+ according to website. There's always the old favourites...Holiday Inn. At least you know what you're getting ;) Regards, Barry

Would be good to have an idea of what moderately priced is. Bad thing for you at the moment is the exchage rate which has gone south over the past year or so. Had a look on www.expedia.co.uk[^] Saw that there were rooms in the "The Kensington Close Hotel & Health Spa" for around £75 a night from mid June onwards, which seemed quite reasonable for central London. Its a 3 star. So should be nice. Also Kensinton is in the West End which is the really really nice part of the city. Loads of restraunts etc. Its got all the things like Science, Natural History and Victoria and Albert museums. Personally the Natural History is the best. Quite amazing inside. Its worth if just for the full sized anamatronic T-Rex, but there is loads of stuff there, and all three are all free to get in. I know lots of people seem to end up right in the centre of town, around Leicester Square and Tottenham Court Rd, but its worth it staying somewhere 10 minutes by tube just to get a nicer hotel. Anyway, hope you have a good time.

OK. You make some good points. Moderately priced to me would mean < $175 US Dollars per night (£95 British pounds). Looking on Expedia, it seems that there are quite a few "highly rated" hotels in this price range, but I do not know which are really in "good" locations. Oh yeah, we are planning the trip in mid-July, not mid-June.
