HGG? Rob Manderson I'm working on a version for Visual Lisp++
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a book - or more accurately, a series of books - that I highly recommend. The books will give you a sense of perspective that just may keep you sane. I'd strongly recommend that you avoid the Total Perspective Vortex, though - you really aren't ready for that. By the way, now that you're back in town, would you like to meet an utterly delightful young lady who just recently moved to Scottsdale? I'm not suggesting anything, as I know you're a happily married man, but my young friend could use a friend in a strange place. I think she could also benefit from some mature guidance - she's only 19, extremely beautiful and intelligent, and lonesome for the company of a peer. Would you be interested in serving as a mentor for a young person who has a lot of possible good futures ahead of her? Let me know, and if it sounds interesting, I'll put you in touch with her. Her birthday is this week, btw, and she has no one to celebrate it with. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Is there any geek anywhere who hasn't read the HGG? While reading RFC 1939 (Post Office Protocol - Version 3)* tonight I ran across this command syntax example: USER name . . . Examples; C: USER frated S: -ERR sorry, no mailbox for frated here C: USER mrose S: +OK mrose is a real hoopy frood :laugh::laugh: * Doesn't everybody read RFCs on Sunday nights? Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.
There is no geek in the world who has not read the HGG. Is somebody has not read it yet, he should start reading right now. :)

Indeed! It's easily one of the seminal works of mankind, but I'll bet that it will never be required reading in any English class. Such a sad state of affairs...:doh: Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Of course, she'll have to cope with my accent :) And whilst we're setting up meetings in public :) I finally have my own transport. We bought a brand new Kia Rio today (I didn't want a truck) so I could make my way north west without inconveniencing the rest of the family. Or as my wife said when we completed the second transaction of the day - 'you've finally become a real person - you've got a car and a mobile phone'. It should be read in all english classes. But in which year? I think it should be read as early as possible, because 1) You cannot read HGG soon/often enough. 2) When I persuaded my mother to read it, she read the first few chapters and then gave up, because she did not understand it. People should read HGG while their minds are still open for strange ideas :)

Geek fancy moves into mainstream (LOTR, Matrix, all the vampire/fantasy crap) Seen Harry Potter yesterday (my niece's birthday - otherwise I wouldn't have gone there) My sister said she never could imagine how a hippogrif looks like. I kept my "I knew all the time" for me. I don't know if this is good, though. Finding yourself being a target group for this perversion of capitalism gives me bad fuzzies.
