Australia: Midnight Oil as a parliamentary candidate.
-
In Australia, the Federal Labor Party leader Mark Latham has called for withdrawal of Australian troops from Iraq, a fairly bold stance in a country that has long prided itself on its tight alliance with the United States. His party has also enlisted Peter Garrett, former lead singer for the rock band Midnight Oil, as a parliamentary candidate. "After his interest in the environment, Mr. Garrett is best known for the constant refrain of anti-Americanism in his music," observed the unimpressed editors of The Australian, the country's leading conservative newspaper. But according to the Melbourne Herald-Sun, Latham told a rally of supporters that Garrett "is giving Australian politics new energy and purpose." How do you Aussies feel about that? As a fan, in America, I'm ALL FOR IT! The time has come, to say Fair's Fair!

Does that mean there will be a free concert at the start of each Parliament session? Or perhaps petitions / literature on his proposed or supported legislation at all of the band's regular concerts??? Will there be "get involved" intermissions??? Steve

I'm an aussie and I think there is something seriously wrong with someone who used to protest against both the liberal and labor parties in Australia for what they were doing to the country and the environment, and just completely go against all he believes in and joins the labor party. How can your distaste for the political parties be so high, and then you join one??? But then again, I would never vote for Mark Latham. I think he speaks before he thinks sometimes.

Thats the funniest thing about the whole mess. If anything I thought he might join the greens one day, but liberal or labor! They say it is a safe seat for them that they are putting him in. I don't know how safe it will be much longer...
