Can WEP encryption be broken?? I have set up a wireless network with WEP encryption in Australia, and I was wondering how secure this actually is. I here there are a couple of programs around that can break WEP encryption but how successful are they? If anyone knows of a program what attempts to break WEP encryption through I wireless card can they please tell me where I can get it from so that I can test my network. If you don’t want to spread this information by posting to everyone can you email me at rackna_17@yahoo.com.au Cheers John;);)

Is there the possibility that you can use WPA instead of WEP[^]?

Yeah, it's broken rather easily. I've never really been on one though. I just remember they always made fun of it on the screen savers. /\ |_ E X E GG

I am also using Wireless (802.11b) in Australia, and when I was shopping around for the router the guy at Harvey Normans told me he can crack them in half an hour and even turning on MAC filtering is no use because he can also get through that as well. (I think he said 128Bit WEP should give you about 3 hours before they can hack it) Even with that concern, If you are at home I doubt very much you are running a super confidential database on your network. So I think it is something you can live with. And in my case even if somebody got into my network the worst they could do is use some of my unlimited ADSL downloads so it really isn't a concern to me at all. Oh yeah they could probably even print rude words out on the printer, but if anything I would probably think that was hilarious. And if you are using it at work, then I would have your company get a professional security guy in to make some recommendations such as the wireless network should be firewalled off from the wired network etc. That last bit is just my opinion because that is the only way I would allow a wireless network into our office when the server is sitting there with public shares containing all our source code. And one last thing, you can get a program called "NetStumbler" (I think) and that will scan for all wireless networks near you and give you an idea on what security is installed. Chris.

WEP is fairly easy to crack, but unless you're setting up a secure internal network for your company, who cares? My Internet connection is via 802.11b networking, and so far I haven't seen any serious attempts to hack it. A good rule of thumb, I think, is to never spend more on security than the data that might be stolen is worth. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Forget about WEP. It doesn't work good, and gets in the way. Set up a real firewall in front of your wireless routers. Allow anyone to get on your wrieless network to see the web, fetch email (POP and IMAP), and send authenticated email. (I don't recall how to do this offhand, and few ISPs support it, but you don't want to allow them to send email unless they have a logged into their ISP.) When you do anything that needs secrutiy settup a VPN to the firewall, or better yet to the other machine.
