Best things to do in London
-
My wife and I have booked a trip to London July 11-19 and are looking forward to it. We are staying in the Kensington area. So to all the CPians who live/work in London (and surrounding area) or have helpful advice, What are the best things to do in London. We especially enjoy historical sites, museums, cultural sites. Also, any suggestions on how not to get ripped off on tours, attractions, etc would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt Gullett

Not the most obvious place but I had time to kill one day ay Euston station and the British Library had a free map exhibition so I wandered in. Amazing ! So many little stories behind some maps, personal and historical. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Tate modern is good. The science museum is good. The natural history museum is OK, but all are free entry. You could do the sights - like buckingham palace, the houses of parliament, picadily circus, trafalgar square etc. All are within about 5-10 minutes walk of each other. There are also some good clubs in London - such as Mean Fiddler on a saturday night if you like Ska, Punk, Rock etc. or Bar Rumba on a Monday night for some really exciting experimental cutting edge electronic. Or perhaps you should look round for a west-end show to go and watch - there are many good ones to choose from. Also portabello road, camden loch and china town are really worth a look - great places to amble round and look at the shops... really cultural. You should also go to speakers corner in hyde park on a sunday afternoon - watch christians loudly debate with the muslims, atheists and wierdos. Joel Holdsworth Wanna give me a job over the summer? I'd recommend the tower although stay wawy from the crown jewels unless you're really impressed by jewelry as the line tends to be a bit long. And the Science Museum is always good. pseudonym67 My Articles[^] "They say there are strangers who threaten us, In our immigrants and infidels. 1. London eye - do a night flight if you're feeling romantic. The saatchi gallery next door is fantastic if you like contempory British art (Damien Hurst et al) ... well the bits that didn't go up in the warehouse fire last month:) 2. St Pauls Cathedral - Wrens masterpiece and one of the finest in London - also in that area (off The Strand) you can walk around the inns of court where the barristers have their chambers - unspoilt and quiet with some excellent architecture (not been for a while so they may have restricted access now - you used to be able to walk through from The Strand down to the Thames). 3. If you are in Kensington then you could always go and have a look at the barriers they have put up outside the American embassy - alternatively, visit Harrods (just don't buy anything there as it is vastly over-priced (thought the cafe is reported to sell fantastic deserts...) 4. Science museam is good but at the end of the day it's probably nothing you can't get in the states - the Natural History museam next door has far more character. 5. National Gallery (and the National Portrait gallery) off Trafalgar square are both excellent - the portrait gallery is also quiet because everyone heads off to the National but still has an excellent collection. Along similar lines, the Tate, Tate modern and Victoria and Albert museam are all excellent too. The British museam is one of the best places on the planet - you could spend your whole holiday there if you're not careful! 6. The BBC proms (the biggest music festival in the world...I think:)) start towards the end of your stay. If you love music of an orchestral nature then this is a must http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/whatson/week1.shtml[^] 7. Things to avoid IMHO, Oxford Street (unless you like crowds and having your wallet nicked), some of the bus tours are a bit of a rip-off - buy a weekly travel card for the Underground and you can use it on the normal buses too, cheaper and you can go where you want, when you want... There is so much more, the parks (hyde, green, regents, etc), the palaces (if you don't mind a bit of a train ride, then hampton court palace in west London is great), the river...
