Christian Graus wrote: So is there any IT work in Samoa Surprisingly there is quite alot. Alot of aid money gets sent to the islands and the majority of it at present is to upgrade IT infrastructure. It's a great environment to work in when the cost of a project is taken out of aid money - there is less pressure to cut corner's and take short cuts.

Cool - I looked at the sitation in Fiji and for programmers it looked pretty bleak, I thought. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder

I finally decided I should ask this beautiful girl[^] to marry me and believe it or not she said YES. Planning on a Janurary wedding because the weather is a little more pleasant for family that will have to travel over from Australia. Looks like I'm an island boy for life now. There will be a huge bash on Friday to celebrate - if anyone is in Samoa :-D this weekend drop me a line your ALL welcome.

Fiji is still trying to recover from the coup believe it or not. They get so little aid now and there economy is slowly begining to slip. Unfortuantley when that happens IT is usually the first victim.

From what I saw, tourism is picking up, helped no doubt by people not wanting to go to Muslim countries like Bali ( I had several people ask me about Fiji on the basis of aborted Bali trip plans ), but the biggest problems seem to be government corruption and reliance on sugar cane, where they can't compete and their industry is held up by government subsidies. I learned a lot about the coup as well while I was there, apparently it was instigated by British and US interests trying to get there hands on a quantity of mahogany on one of the islands. Tourism is definitley up - I was there for work 2 months ago and couldn't believe it. A shame about the circumstances leading to it, but ... They are still the leading pacific nation (not including Australia and NZ) but remitences (money sent back from Fijian's overseas) are right down and the country is feeling the pinch. It will get them on there own feet and they will be stronger for it eventually. They have a lot of land so they need to start looking at other incomes from it. They are doing work with sheep right now that might help them out.

Samoa is trying to import some of the sheep here to play with (how New Zealand sounding) but Fiji has some patent issues and will not release them to us until the intellectual property is correctly registered. It would make a huge difference to this place if we had another source of local meat, import prices just keep climbing. More projects like this need implementing, especially after the cyclone

It amazes me how much Fijians live on lamb ( well, mutton, they sell it as lamb ), and tinned bulamacow ( beef ), instead of stuff they can buy fresh, or catch themselves. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder

I am not trying to sound depressing but..... 1. Are you sure? 2. Do you really want to give up other women? 3. Its going to cost time and (lots of) money 4. You will never have freedom again 5. You will not be able to work late or play games on the computer It could just be me, but am I looking on the dark side or what? ;P Anyway, enjoy! Oh, and congratulations. If you vote me down, my score will only get lower
