That lightning strike earlier started a wildfire so that is the top news here this afternoon. We get powerful thunder storms here in the high desert. At a local lake years ago I saw a boat sink when the stern was swamped by the waves caused from the high winds of a thunderstorm. This occurred at the boat ramp as the owners attempted to get the craft onto the trailer. This was just a 18 foot ski boat mind you but the water was so violent that the 5 or so people could not control it enough to get it onto the trailer.

Just watched a Hawk scoop up a squirl and fly up into the tree outside my window. While I was looking saw a nice bolt of lightning a couple of miles away! Mother Nature… "The Greatest Show on Earth".

I live near Fall Creek in the East Central Indiana countryside. There is a never ending display of nature all around us. My favorite is a Great Blue Heron that lumbers past our house at least once or twice a day. Incredible bird. Must have a six foot wing span and all gangly looking. I also often see it standing in the creek, catching fish. Absolutely beautiful.

Yes, and no, they are an introduced species, so I'm all for culling cats, feral ones anyway, the others should be teased on a regular basis. :-D But the culling should be done in a humane way. "Ergo huffabo et puffabo et tuam domum inflabo" ait magnus malus lupus.

Funny you should mention that because we were sitting on our back deck reading a book today and out of the corner of my eye I saw something moving in the corner of the yard, I look up and it's a young black bear. He stops, looks at me then boots it down the hillside to the river behind our house. I think he was after the apples on the tree. Downside is now my wife won't want to leave the patio door open to our bedroom at night (she's scared of bears) and I'm going to roast in this heat. Maybe I'll have to find some way to lock it half open or something. Our property is right on a hill overlooking a river and swampy area beside it and we get rabbits, more bald eagles than you can shake a stick at, hawks, crows, loons, ducks, deer (pain in the butt), now bears. It's like a zoo out here. I wish I could afford to fence the whole property, wildlife *sounds* cool and all, but it's not when it's in your face every day.

Last weekend we had a squall blow up in less than two minutes that dropped visibility from a few miles to a few yards, because of the dust the wind was carrying. A few drops of rain fell, as well, but it could as easily been a downpour with the usual flash floods from the looks of things. Five minutes later it was over - there's just no way to predict what wil happen in areas of extreme climate. Today's boaters had no such excuse, however. With mild winds the chop on the lake consisted of 4" rollers spaced about 6' apart - easy surface conditions, even for an amateur like me. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I'm certainly not so silly as to get upset when a predator attacks some prey. Given that there are animal-molesters and stupid people on the country-side as well, perhaps a common permit for all humans?

You should never teach a dog to swim. I've learned this the hard way, one of my friends spent hours in court arging that his dog loves water and it wasn't abuse to teach it to swim. Seriously, I was there as witness. (At no time during the time in question was anyone closer to him and the dog than me, charges were dismissed before I had to take the stand) Some days you just can't back a trailer to save you life, others it just goes exactly where you want it. I've found that the more complex the landing, the easier it is for boaters to get it right. Not sure if it is cause you pay more attention or only the experts back up there.

But the trailers weren't the problem. These people had no idea how to make the boat go where it belongs. One clown hit the trailer at a 45° angle, hooked up the winch, and tried to drag the thing into place. It never occurred to him to have his partner jump off the boat and push the stern into line. We'll be refinishing his hull soon. The idiots who fire up the motors on land to clear the water out are our best customers. A pump impeller has a dry life of under three seconds, and costs about $300 to replace. Money in the bank...:laugh: The surprising thing is that there is a class taught by the US Coast Guard locally every month or so that teaches all the proper procedures for safe, reliable boating. It costs a couple of evenings and $40, yet almost no one attends. Most of these boats cost $20K or more - $40 seems like a good investment to me when a little training might save your boat and life!
