While they aren't my favorite group in the world, someone has finally decided to stop moaning about stupid technology patents and due something about it (if in fact suing is "doing something"): http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/07/05/software_patents_double_whammy/[^]

great stuff. I personally believe most software and business practice patents should not exist. Patents were created to foster invention through protection of good ideas. Current application of those laws is creating a mess for everyone.

Yea, I pretty much want to see all of these go down.... What's funny is how all these people go after Mom & Pop internet businesses (Okay adult sites might not be exactly Mom & Pop type stuff but still not a huge corperation). Because they know if they step on the wrong toes they will get their %@# handed to them in court. Not that I have a problem with them in the first place, but this is REALLY where you got to like Microsoft. The Eloas(spelling?) patent was way broad and MS and the open source community helped destroy it.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation appears to not have an issue with stupid patents, but patents that violate their peculiar view of the world and business. They lost half their credibility for me by claiming the patents mentioned are "Crimes against the public domain." They lost the rest when, for Nintendo, they wrote that the patent in question "threatens reverse engineering of videogames". It's unfortunately, since some of the ideas they are pushing are rather good. Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke

Exactly how I felt and exactly on the same two issues, which is why I said I had some reservations about it, but something does have to be done and maybe this will help bring the issue to the forefront a little more.
