Its all a matter of perspective I suppose, but I disagree completely. The "left" has not yet finished its flirtation with Marxism and is still desperately trying to figure out some way to make it appear to work. In the US, the current tactic is to give Marxism a Jeffersonian face. Their power base remains dependency of large masses of people upon political systems. They cuold no more turn away from that basic political paradigm than a weed could turn away from the dirt it's growing out of. They might pay lip service to principles that appear market oriented on the surface, but it is only to stall for time until they figure out some way to get it all under the control of government. And, frankly, traditional American culture is in its entirity a repudiation of European culture. We are, and I hope always remain, the anti-Europe. This was different. It was an official fundraiser for the Democratic party. Most Americans expect a certain amount of decorum from their leaders. In this case, they didn't get it from Kerry, Edwards or the Democrats in general.
