You know, I've been talking (fluently) for about 30 years now. I've been writing for around 27 and typing for, say, 22. During this time I've probably used the word weird millions of times, but no matter how many e-mails I send or documents I write, I still spell it WIERD. How wierd! Seriously though, I had the exact same problem as you the first time I heard the word. My mother tongue is not english, so I heard the word before I saw it spelled out. When I saw it spelled I was amazed that E came before I. To me, the "ei" is a far different vowel/diphtong than "ie". -- Ich bin Joachim von Hassel, und ich bin Pilot der Bundeswehr. Try having an email discussion about a 'debugger' or - god forbid - sarcastically describing a bad one as a 'bugger' when you have the nasty habit of homing your index finger onto 'k' instead of 'j' when switching back and forth between keyboard and mouse with your right hand (touch-typing, I always hit 'b' with my right hand)... I can't believe no-one did this before me. And yeah, I sympathise, I'm generally a decent speller, but this is one word that always confuses me, if I get it right or otherwise. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder

Complete Rule: Use I before E Except after C Or when sounded as "I" as in Einstein Or "A" as in weigh "A" Neither, weird, foreign, leisure Seize, forfeit, and height Are the common exceptions spelled right But don't let the C-I-E-N words get you uptight! Steve
