Umm I appreciate the concern and all, but doesn't everyone assume there is a new virus every single day and subscribe to automatic virus signature file update every evening? Is there seriously anyone here who waits until someone warns them about a virus before they update their virus scanner?

Nope. There are a LOT of people who don't like the autoupdate systems. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Yeah for windows. I haven't met anybody who doesn't like the autoupdate for their virus definitions. Of course then there are people like me who don't run a virus scanner and thus far I haven't ever gotten a virus because I am not afraid of windows update.

Virus?! Virus checking software? Updates? Wha?! Try to dumb it down a bit here-- too much high falutin' language.

Ditto. The only reason I have one now (after not having one since I started using computers with Win 3.1) is because the IT dept. found out I wasn't using one and had a fit. Department policy and whatnot. :sigh:

What's with all the people admitting they are so foolish here in one day?;) Seriously if I was your I.T. guy I would have had a fit as well, of course I should have ensured you had one installed already and rapped your knuckles big time if you attempted to disable it or anything. All I see when someone says that is the equivalent of someone saying "I have sex with strangers every day and I never bother with that stupid condom, it's completely unnecessary because I'm such a good judge of character I just *know* who is safe to sleep with"

BTW, I never ran an AV on my machine on my whole life: I've been using computers since I was 11, so I must have been very lucky for 22 years. Also, I was able to fix several virus infections on machines of my friends without using an antivirus, when it's not available or not updated. Have you considered the possibility that me and Steve know what we are doing? Just as an exercise, could you please describe a scenario where we could get our personal machines infected? Yes, even I am blogging now!

If you turn off activex support, don't visit suspicious web sites, don't download executables from suspicous people, don't run outlook, don't run anything that's been sent to you, you're pretty much safe. I haven't had a virus since 94, and that was because I trusted a school buddy. I have run av-scanners though, but I've always uninstalled them after some time. They use up way too many resources. Occasionally if I'm worried, I visit symantec and run their online scanner. I saw your analogy with "unsafe sex" further up in the thread. My way of doing things is more like taking me and her to the doctor and do a test. Then I check her up periodically if she's cheating on me. ;) -- Ich bin Joachim von Hassel, und ich bin Pilot der Bundeswehr. Welle: Erdball - F104-G Starfighter

John Cardinal and others may think it foolish in the extreme but I am right there with you Chris. The proof is in our records. I have a virus scanner on our main email server, more to weed out inbox clutter than to protect us though. Other than that I don't run one on my desktop, I update Windows when I can and haven't had a virus for... well I can't remember the last time I did get one. For less technical people I agree an AV is required. But we work in this medium every day and know the common sense. I find AVs on desktops to be very intrusive and they use up a good portion of your resources. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python." Like Chris above, I agree with you Jason. We have backups, a determined virus or attack gets around AV and it drains resources. Common sense goes a long way (there are no guaranteesm, with or without an AV). regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python." We have Norton Antivirus at work, and the default installation turns on their realtime file protection. It multiplies build times by a factor of ten. We end up turning the realtime thing off, which pisses off the IT guys to no end. I make up for it by having definitions updated and then running a full system scan every night. Also, network shares on my development machine and the build machine are only readable, except for a single 'public' directory, which is normally empty. This seems to reduce our exposure. Where the rest of the building gets washed in virus attacks once or twice a month, we've had an infected machine only once in the last 8-10 months.

That is correct John Cardinal wrote: no offense but that's just foolish and you have been very lucky so far. I'm going to have to disagree. I have 4 systems only I. I use Maxthon (formerly MyIE2) to browse, disable ActiveX on all but a few sites I trust (for work, etc). As we all know email is also a major infection point, but I know enough to be suspicious of ANY attachment even from trusted sources. That's why I refuse to accept any attachment if it isn’t a PDF or some image format. And like I mention before a simple hardware firewall/router will protect you from most windows exploits if properly configured. You just have to be suspicious of everything, and with a little knowledge can live without having a damn AV scanner running in the background ruining the performance of my systems. Now my slightly older laptop (not one of the 4) is used by the rest of my family (mom, brother, etc). That one I will admit does get infected about every week with spyware and shit simply because they don't know how to respond to things... like active x prompts. I had been just wiping the system clean, full format and everything to fix (actually is a lot easier this way). Recently I've attempted to configure the system to prevent all active x and other possibly malicious events from happening. I guess we'll see how long it takes;)
