Newfoundland

I am curious, any CPians from Newfoundland? I am reading The Colony of Unrequited Dreams about a boy from Newfoundland. A good book but the picture painted of Newfoundland is pretty harsh, tough place to live. About as different to South Africa as I can imagine. Failing that, anybody ever visited Newfoundland? My sister studies with a former-fisherman from Newfoundland and he kisses the ground everyday he wakes up in South Africa, glad to be away from ice and snow and seals and fish. He also drinks a rather lot (so he fits in with us quite well). regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python." Casper who came to the EuroCPian meet in London is from Newfoundland. Sadly I have no idea what name he posts under though, so he may not see this thread.

Meg's World - Blog PhotographyCool, thanks Meg. Thought we had finally found a country not represented on CP :) Check this cool high-speed film out. Supposedly a water droplet hitting sand. 1000fps. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python." Tisk tisk. Newfoundland is not a country, it is a province of Canada. http://www.gov.nf.ca/ "Fish and guests stink in three days." - Benjamin Franlkin

Some friends and I took a road trip to Newfoundland a few years ago. Well, road trip plus a ferry trip (either 6 hours or 14 hours, depending on which ferry you take) from Nova Scotia. But anyway, it was beautiful country. Tree-covered mountains, cliffs overlooking the ocean, and lots of great scenery are all around... and viewing wildlife and marine life is great. Much of it is wilderness, and except St. John's and scattered small towns, it's sparsely populated. The climate is rather nice in the summer. I think it can get cold in the winter but not awful (except maybe in the north and in Labrador - I think it gets extremely cold up there.) And if you take an out-of-the-way trip, you can get to St. Pierre and Miquelon, a small group of islands that are part of France. (I enjoy saying I took a road trip from the United States to France... ) I don't know what it would be like to live there, though. I suppose living in St. John's wouldn't be too different from living in any other city, as there are Wal-Mart, McDonald's, etc. Gas (petrol) is expensive compared to the US and to other parts of Canada. The island itself is somewhat isolated - though you can get there by long ferries, and St. John's has an airport. "Fish and guests stink in three days." - Benjamin Franlkin

I think that film is a steel ball dropping into sand made with extra fine particles. I can't find a reference that doesn't require a login to read, but essentially the sand behaves similar to both sand and liquid.
I can imagine the sinking feeling one would have after ordering my book, only to find a laughably ridiculous theory with demented logic once the book arrives - Mark McCutcheon

I haven't got that far in the book yet, still under British rule :P But yes, quite right, apologies. One of those places you don't really associate with anything but itself, like California. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python." >I think that film is a steel ball Ah, quite right. I was fooled by what I thought was a break-away drop following the main one. Turns out it is just a reflection in the rear glass :) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python."
