[Kurt Dresner and Peter Stone] designed an automated system where cars reserve a time to pass through an intersection as they approach it and are then sped up or slowed down to ensure their arrival at exactly the right time. This allows traffic to enter the intersection from all directions simultaneously, eliminating the need for traffic lights and considerably reducing delays caused by stopping traffic. View the simulation[^] ( Press simulator->Run ). That would definately take some getting used to. I can't imagine passing within a few feet of a car traveling perpendicular to my direction of travel. ----------------------------------------------------- Bush To Iraqi Militants: 'Please Stop Bringing It On' - The Onion "Moore's prominent presence in the news brings to light some serious questions, such as 'Can't he at least try to look presentable?'" - The Onion
Kewl, a link to a page with two red lines and a grey box. And no, I am not going to download a bunch of hard to find java garbage to view a stupid simulation.

Such a system already exists in Montreal*. Well, for the pedestrians, not the cars. People there will encounter an intersection and, regardless of the color of the light, keep on walking through. * The last time I was in that city, which admittedly was years ago. --Mike-- Personal stuff:: Ericahist | Homepage Shareware stuff:: 1ClickPicGrabber | RightClick-Encrypt CP stuff:: CP SearchBar v2.0.2 | C++ Forum FAQ ---- "That probably would've sounded more commanding if I wasn't wearing my yummy sushi pajamas." -- Buffy

I already drive like that anyhow. Signature under construction.

Yep it would scare the bejesus out of me too. With an atotomated system a miss of an inch is as good as a mile, which worries me as to what tolerances would be dialed in. - A couple of yrs ago I had another idea like this, but far simpler. If at a normal set of lights it was known when they would change this information could be communicated to cars approaching the lights via a display suggesting their appropriate approach speed. If you consider a car that travels at 50k then - 25k for 300 meters then back to 50k to pass through the lights. Compared to a car that travels at 50k then slows to a stop, then must accelerate to 50k through the crossing space it becomes apparent that savings could be made. Principally because you can fit slightly more cars through in the same time period. Regardz Colin J Davies

You'd still have morons trying to 'beat the light' and making life miserable for the rest of us who simply obey existing law and drive defensively. "My kid was Inmate of the Month at Adobe Mountain Juvenile Corrections Center" - Bumper Sticker in Bullhead City

You ever asked for the cost of a bridge? *both* investment and maintenance. and there are many crossroads where this is just not possible But I agree, it would be safer.

Here's a test i did to see how this schema would react to "real traffic". go back to main, then hit the custom simulation link. Now, use for each direction, 3 and .1, and make sure you selected reservation in the combo. Just after a few minutes, you realize that the bottleneck is not at the intersection but way before. And not as many cars get spawned for the same time span therefore giving false results. The ideas seemed good at first and it did impress me, but as you add cars you add delays. Also, the simulation doesnt take into account that drivers could want to turn left or right. Another test i did was: 2 lanes, .1 spawn 600 x 600 Quick facts after 6000 time cycles: reservation had 113 cars thru (finished) traffic lights had 210 cars thru (finished) Nothing to compare really.

We have something like that here called groene lijn (green line) it indicates the speed you should be traveling at to make it in time to the next light to have a green light (and yes there is an indication for you're not gonna get green; its (~) ). But it is getting less and less common because there are now intelligent lights everywhere that give right of way to busses (they have a transmitter that influences the traffic lights). And such a system would be hard to combine with a green line :( Rutger

I read about the Bus controlled lights several yrs ago in Hamburg. To be blunt It sounded like a really good idea for a city with lots of buses. Unsure how it works in practice. But any system that can get 10% improvement out of any present crossings is a bonus. Regardz Colin J Davies
