we have used various incarnations of this. Its not a bad product, but can suffer when you need to tweak the installation to do something that is not mainstream. We also use MS install sheild, and wise it a lot simpler to use in many respects. Roger Allen Sonork 100.10016

In the context I would say "not mainstream" means what normal Windows install program wont do. For example, IE*.* doesn't format the harddrive when being install. If it did it would "not mainstream". For another example, when old Win3.X setup program were hot in stores, none to not many setup program set the internet homepage and now it is becoming a custom(I have seen). I tend to forget now as I don't have to put together installation programs these days (I never release any new stuff ;P ), but if I remeber correctly, if you want to replace that computer bitmap on the default dialogs its pretty much impossible as your changes never get applied. There were also problems adding new dialog and trying to only get hem to display using the if/then blocks which seemed to be problematic. There were a couple of other things that were really annoying in that you would have to select every file individually in the script if you wanted it to only update if it was older etc. This could be a right pain when you had 500+ files. Of course this could all be down to me not *quite* knowing what I was doing. But the help files sucked. So it reduced you to guess work quite a lot. Roger Allen Sonork 100.10016

Wise is better than InstallShield but their claims are questionable--they calimed on the phone 6 times better compression but they only have 2 times better compression. However, I would NOT use either. It is very easy to write your own installer or obtain the code to installers that are better than either InstallShield or Wise where you can own the source code for under $350. I used the Wise installer pretty extensively a couple of years ago. One notable part of my introduction to the software was creating a beta install for the code we were working on. My boss installed it and it deleted the contents of his C drive! I thought I was telling Wise to delete the contents of a directory, but Wise thought I meant delete the whole C drive. The lesson learned was be very careful deleting stuff because Wise will merrily do it's thing without giving you any warnings. All in all, it's a pretty good tool, but we pushed it to the limit of it's features. If I had it to do over, I probably would have written the code from scratch. Andy Cowenhoven

Hi Tim, If I get valuable feedback from the beta testers we do provide incentives. I've been using Wise for quite a few years and am generally happy with it. I upgraded to InstallBuilder 8.1 earlier in the year and it is a big improvement over V5 which I used previosly. The Script Wizard is usefull and you can now use wildcards for file specifications instead of having to specify each and every file individually. The Help is still not as good as it should be though, which is my main gripe. I had a Wise script that wasn't checked out of my VCS a while back and I couldn't work out why a whole lot of functionality was disabled. It made sense once I twigged, but from memory Wise gave me no indication of what the problem was (ie. the file was r/o). I find the wide range of similar, but different Wise products difficult to wrap my head around. That is which one do I buy to meet my needs. Before upgrading the last time around I did evaluate a number of other Installers, but for various reasons I decided to stick with Wise in the end. Pricing for many of these products seems a little steep, especially here in Australia. I haven't had to use Tech Support in a while so I can't comment on how good, bad or otherwise it is these days. I have had some problems with their Upgrade Wizard, including it totally hanging. Hope that's of some help. Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows.
