No game will ever beat AvP in scare factor, remember that... :D That was the only game I was really afraid to play... PS IMO Doom3 isn't all that impressive, I, personally, expected a whole lot more.
AvP was pretty scary, I'll give you that. For me, nothing will ever beat the original Resident Evil on the Playstation. Nothing like 5 college guys in a dark room huddled around a 19 inch TV with a $1k stereo system cranked up as high as the windows could take. We screamed like little girls on multiple occasions.:wtf::eek: Wait.... I don't think that sounded right....:~ -J

Oh come on! AvP was as scary as playing Mario with your kid brother in the kitchen as your mum bakes cookies. And I hate scary stuff. Unreal scared the beejesus out of me the first time I played the first level, when the Skarg came down the darkened corridor. AvP was not scary. So what is not impressive about Doom III? I am curious to know if it is worth it. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan wrote: "I always knew that somewhere deep inside that likable, Save the Whales kinda guy there lurked the heart of a troublemaker..." "So what is not impressive about Doom III? I am curious to know if it is worth it." The graphics are out of this world. It gets very repetitive though after a while. Same old ID style gameplay. Shoot anything that moves. I would have liked to see them beef up that some. Can't beat the graphics though.

Unreal scared the beejesus out of me the first time I played the first level, when the Skarg came down the darkened corridor. AvP was not scary. Unreal was not scary, if anything it was laughable. Nobody can possibly get scared when there are only 12 polygons per monster... As for AvP you mentioned when the lights go out and Skaarj jumps at you for the first time, well AVP is like that most of the game, always unpredictable, not knowing what's around the next corner, a hell of adrenalin rush... So what is not impressive about Doom III? I am curious to know if it is worth it. I wrote this in other forum so I'll just repeat myself -very closed, claustrophobic levels (id trademark of course) - really, what's the fun roaming in the 6-feet wide hallways? Often get stuck around the corners or some pipe, or ledder, gimme some room for god's sake -extremely repetitive levels consisting of endless corridors, I always get a nagging feeling that I've already been here, seen that corner... (dunno, hope that will change towards the end of the game) -extremely straightforward - if you've player Max Payne you know what I'm talking about, most of the time there is only one door in the room so you'll never get lost -switching back and forth between flashlight and a gun is extremely annoying, why couldn't they make him hold gun in one hand and flashlight in another (or in case of shotgun mount it underneath) - would have been so much better... -monsters aren't scary -graphics is not as good as I expected, still top of the line, just nowhere as close to the screenshots id has been feeding us for the past year Don't get me wrong, I loved DoomI for it's demonic atmosphere, but DoomII was a noticable let-down to me because it was mostly about carnage, all the scary/unknown atmosphere from the first Doom was gone. Doom III is just a logical conclusion to the series, no atmosphere, not the least scary, just another 3D gimmipick. At times like this I wish Romero did not leave id. If there ever will be DoomIV, something like 25 year anniversary, it will be a total crap...

Well it had to happen I suppose. I've been playing the twitch/kill games ever since I was in college and the big game was Wolfenstein 3D... not RTCW, but the "original" 3D game. Over the years I've gone through more of these types of games then I could ever even begin to list here. At 31, yup, 31, I was itching to try out Doom3. I've been looking forward to this game for a really long time... ... and I can't play it. Nope. Can't do it. Maybe 10 minutes in... and I'm shutting the computer down. I'm not even just leaving the computer or turning off the game, but I have to shut it down to stop the evil from escaping. Hopefully the monsters will get my cats first and give me time to get out the door...:eek::eek:

Yeah, the Unreal comment was to show you I scare easily in games or movies. I played through AvP and found it completely unscary. Too much dark to be scary. "Oh more shadows, yup, another monster in there, ho hum." As for keeping Romero at id, I doubt it would have helped what with Romero's fabulous Daikatana fiasco :) I guess I will get the Doom III demo and see from there rather than forking out for the full game. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan wrote: "I always knew that somewhere deep inside that likable, Save the Whales kinda guy there lurked the heart of a troublemaker..." sighist || Agile Programming | doxygenlol, perhaps it wasn't as much 12 polygons as the contrast between the monsters and the rest of the game. Imagine - you get this beatiful beautiful jar-dropping imagery, the sky, the outdoors, dynamic lighting, ambient music, loads of huge open spaces and... a polygon-handicapped monster without motion-capture... laughable, I tell you...

In regards to becomming a sissy: My wife has been making fun of little-sissy-me since I started playing Doom 3. I can play for around 20mins, and then I need a break. It sometimes scares the piss out of me, plain and simple. Then again, I do play in the basement, turn off the lights, and play with headphones on... I think I'm just looking for mental punishment. what's worse? I am enjoying the game enough to keep coming back for more! Having said that, however, the game might just become repetitive if they don't start showing me more than hallways, medical labs, and hallways. I've yet to get turned around like I used to in the original Doom... not that this is horrible... but when I finish Doom 3 in Marine mode and unlock Nightmare mode, I would hope to get frazzled when enemies keep respawing and eventually get hopelessly lost. There's a lot of laughs when you get cornered, lost, and many baddies come lunging (sp?) for more brains. I do plan on getting the Duct Tape mod that tapes the damned flashlight to the top/bottoms of some weapons to allow me to see a little better. Even after tweaking my vid card's brightness outside of the game, and turning the brightness all the way up in D3, it's still freakin' dark! Then again, I think they were going for dark. For those who are wondering if this is a good game? I have this to say; I don't know yet. See, I like games mostly for their technology - I am an eyecandy fool. But the game is fun to play, running into rooms with guns blazing, hitting mostly walls and lights, and hoping that you don't soil yourself before you reach the next lit area. It's got some good surprises, moody atmosphere, awesome sound, and many creapy shadows. The gameplay is what you'd expect; you get the nerve to go forward, turn corner, flinch at demons/ghouls/zombies/screaching cats/explosion sounds/falling debris/etc., and BANG! BANG! BANG! As for story? I do love a game with a good story (e.g. Deus EX 1 [not 2]) and System Shock 1 & 2) but so far Doom 3 barely has any story. It's been more "Well... here's a semi-plausible reason to go to the next area". But this is id Software, not Valve Software or Squaresoft; I expect nothing more or less from them. Holy jebus, I gotta get back to work! Stoopid Doom! : Dean 'Karnatos' Michaud
