The Olympics

With only 3 days to go to the Olympics, which events are you looking forward to watching most? (if any) I find the gymnastics incredible and always look forward to watching them. I also quite enjoy watching the marathon. Unusual for me to be looking forward to sports TV quite so much

Meg's World - Blog Photographyno sport in particular, but I tend to like the sports with clear wins ( no subjective judging ). I like swimming and cycling.

Meg's World - Blog PhotographySwimming is good, track & field too. I mostly like the individual sports, can't be bothered with the team sports like hockey, football, basketball. The table tennis is always good for laugh :)

Meg's World - Blog PhotographyCuriously, when I go to the gym I find that I am more motivated when they are showing athletics on the screens rather than anything else. So, I am looking forward to the olympics because I can see that it will provide motivation for me to get fitter. I am, so far, unsure why this motivates me because I have no real desire to become an athlete and compete in events like that. I am guessing that watching healthy and fit people at least matches my goal of becoming more healthy and fit and I can see that what I want is achievable - somewhat like the effect Roger Bannister[^] had after he broke the 4 minute mile* for the first time. After seeing that it was possible many athletes followed. *I don't think for one moment that I am going to achieve a four-minute-mile (1609m), nor am I going to try

Meg's World - Blog PhotographyI'm curious. Why do you like to watch the marathon? Are you a runner? The marathon would seem to be a limited interest event. It's long (two hours and change), the drama is by no means obvious, and elite runners usually aren't the most attractive people in the world (scrawny, no muscle mass). BTW: I'm a runner; my two marathon times were 5:45 and 4:52, respectively.

I've done a lot of running in my time, yes, although 21.5Km is the longest I've ever done in one stretch. I enjoyed cross country at school more than road running, and these distances tend to be shorter. I also enjoy swimming, cycling and kayaking, I guess as a result of being crap at sports like field hockey (where I do enjoy playing wing). In SA we grow up watching the Comrades ultra marathon on one of the winter public holidays. I guess that's what got me into watching it :)

Meg's World - Blog Photography21.5K is quite respectable. I haven't run anything longer than about 7-8 miles the last three years or so. I like cycling myself; I ride a Trek 1220 road bike. Megan Forbes wrote: Comrades ultra marathon  People who do ultras are incredible. I can see myself doing another marathon (or at least a half) some day, but an ultra is out of my reach. I'm too old, too heavy, and have too many biomechanical problems :sigh:.

Meg's World - Blog PhotographyMy two must watch events are the marathon and the triathlon. A Canadian won gold in the triathlon in Sydney and with luck he may do well again this time around. :clap, clap: :) I also like some of the biking and swimming events. Chris Meech I am Canadian. Similar here then, I haven't done any road running for quite a while. In SA I no longer feel it's safe enough, and coming over to the UK I was too lazy :-O. Still, I swim before work each morning, and we do a lot of offroad cycling and hiking on weekends, so I'm quite a bit fitter than I look :)
