Loaded XP SP2 I am impressed
-
It took a little longer than I thought to load but everything seems to work fine. I prefer hardware firewalls and my own AV provider but considering all of the users that have nothing it is a start. All in all I had few problems and I think the AV and Firewall are a good Idea it is time to raise the bar and make it harder to be bad. I am sure they will be slammed by the script kiddies by the end of the week but it is nice to see MS making an effort. Just an observation I feel like I have had more popups and spyware problems with XP than I ever did on 2000.

Thanks for sharing about SP2 - it makes me grab the 270+ MB Network downloadable from Microsoft Download Center and install SP2. Could you comment on performance/memory usage of SP2? Did it speed-up/slowed-down or stayed the same? Mike M WinInsider.com - News for Microsoftonians

Sure. Tonight the flavor is XML, Xslt and C# the Solution has about 8 projects and is all xml to QuickBooks for Data so it is not a real load test. I have about 12 apps open running 12941 handles and 45 processes including folding@home which keeps the cpu pegged. I have not noticed any negative difference in perforamce at all. The box is very midrange (AMD 2200 with a 1/2 gig of ram and 2 120gig drives) the PF Usage is around 400mb of ram all night. I would have to study it a little longer but I usually run a little higher in the RAM usage so it may have improved memory usage(very non MS behavior). Side note I bought a graphics card a few months ago and it has been a pain keeping it set up and the update found it and installed new drivers got the configuration right and I see clearly now. What a great evening a little code, a little wine, mild weather lounging on the CP ahhh I am at peace. Hope it is going as well for you. :)

I'll Reply if that's ok Mike, First off I couldn't get it to intall on two compaq Laptops and on one dell laptop on the first go round, It would lock-up trying to replace a windows media player file wmploc.dll on each one, the fix was to rename the file to .old and start over, then delete the 364mb of temp files it left behind in the root directory. The desktops I've done so far went thru the install just fine. Performance, was actually improved on the laptops and the desktops, which I thought was great, but then again it's practicaly reinstalling all of windows, after about an hour or so of running, and reindexing the hard disks they all ran great. So all in all I kind of like it so far, I hope I'm not speaking too soon. I havn't found any software not working yet, except the ATI video drivers on the compaqs which it replaced for me. One thing I didn't care for was it reset registry settings that had been set, like to disable messenger and the likes, and the group policy settings. The memory useage is less but at about normal for a new install. Oh, I also don't care for the Idea of Having to get "New" antivirus software just so a red button and a popup won't show in the tray. But I'll give it a couple of day's and see how it goes. I think It'll be OK.

Be careful when loading it, at work XP SP2 loaded fine (when I mean fine, the 1st attempt failed looking for system.ch_ file), at home it loaded ok but after a reboot, it BSOD looking for MOUNTABLE BOOT DRIVE. I thought I cured this problem by going into Safe Mode and restarting, but last last it continously BSOD. I managed to get back into safe mode and unstall SP2. I'm not the only person to have had problems and I I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see XP SP2a. My 2 pennies worth.

I've installed it on 2 machines so far, and no problems at all. Takes a while to install, and a while to boot up again, and login, but absolutely fine. The new options for the memory protection are under My Computer, Properties, Performance. I thought it was only for AMD64's, but it seems to say some of the functionality does work on 32bit processors. The only thing I use that I've heard that has a problem is the DivX codec. Its builds optimised machine code on the fly. But from this control panel you can overide it for given applications.

This is good news, Kevin. Have you installed it on any laptops? There have been reports of problems with blue screening Inspirons (which happen to be a popular choice for devs at our shop). /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Articles | Freeware | Music ravib@ravib.com
