This is hilarious... and I'm an American. I love the Olympic games, I have ever since I was a little kid. The spirit of it is just something I've always appreciated. Of course, as an American I want us to make as strong a showing as possible, but this is hilarious anyway. We are getting SPANKED in basketball... SPANKED. I fell out of love with basketball years ago... it's gotten out of hand here. The level of play has dropped steadily as players leave early or skip college altogether to get the big dollars that the NBA offers them.... and it shows. Today's NBA players are overpaid spoiled brats and the butt-kicking they are getting right now should be a wake up call for the NBA. This clearly shows that we are no longer competitive internationally. Some "Dream Team".

No, the Olympics is for each country to put their best athletes against one another in a friendly world-wide competition. Traditionally America did not allow it's professional athletes to compete. However, ... can't remember the year, but the then Soviets beat the US in basketball during the Olympics and the next Olympics the US decided to allow the professionals to play introducing the first "Dream Team"... and it WAS a dream team. In those days there was no question about who had the best basketball players and that first team was the BEST we had to offer. These days players don't always want to play. As someone mentioned above, many players declined the invitation. Regardless, Iverson and Duncan are two of our best and you see how little difference it's making. It always comes down to TEAM play over individuals.

The Olympics being only for amateurs was a myth about the ancient Olympics that carried over to the modern games. So sad a sportive competition turns first to a nationalistic display and then to a marketing event! Human nature, I presume...:sigh:

I think he was talking about the Seoul games (1988), when US team lost the semi-finals against USSR. That was the last US olimpic amateur basketball team, professional 'Dream Teams' took over since Barcelona (1992).

I am a basketball fanatic. I play 20 or more hours a week. What a sport! It is amazing! Words cannot describe the level of intensity and competition. Your analysis of the NBA and it's impact on the sport in america is a bulls eye. What a shame. Magic Johnson talked about it years ago when he retired. The new kids coming up and their attitude. Most people that follow the sport are probably not at all surprised by this. Since the first Dream Team the level of shear physical athletic talent has climbed on each successive team. Even so each teams ability to dominate opponents has diminished. Today they can't even "win" let alone dominate. What a shame the development of the mind and spirit has not progressed in parallel with the development of the physical.

I dissagree. The best basketball in the world is still being played in the US. It is just that other countries are catching up, and Americans refuse to accept it and expect their team to win every single game on each and every tournament. Sorry, this is just not realistic any more, and this is actually good for the basketball as a game. This loss may even be good for American basketball, because it may convince Americans to take international tournaments seriously and to properly prepare their national team. Anyway, I still bet that Americans will win the gold, especially since Serbian team is crippled on this tournament (no Peja Stojakovic, Divac, Jaric, Gurovic...)

After reading the other posts, I want to comment about the pros participating. I you own a pro team (NBA), paying them millions to win games, or at least draw crowds, would you risk one getting injured off on a 2-week trip, playing for someone else? His career could be over, or he gets a medal, you get squat. Look at Dale Earnhart Jr. (NASCAR driver). A few weeks ago he got burned in a sports car practice, unrelated to his regular drive. The next few weeks, he had to keep getting substitute drivers to finish the race for him, hurting his points standing. 2nd point IF a pro does go, will he pass the new foolproof drug testing? If he/she is not sure, better to just pass rather than be publicly outed. Or you could have a "motorcycle accident" I think athletes who relied on drugs before, just flushed their future away, and we are going to see a lower, but more realistic, performance level from the rest. Canada has 6 zones, none of which are erogenous.

Do note that the Puerto Rico team has 3 NBA players on it (one of whom, Arroyo, plays with Utah, as does one of the US forwards, Boozer. I think Arroyo was helped in that Utah still plays a very team oriented game [versus a superstar free-for-all.]) What the Olympics really proves is that basketball is a team sport that requires players spend more than five games together. It also helps if you have more than three talented players. (Why doesn't the US just take the winner of the NCAA tournament to the Olympics?) Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke
