I know this is something most of us probably rather not think about, but sitting at a computer all day isn't exactly healthy and typing isn't exactly what I would consider aerobic exercise. So the question, if you don't think it's to personal, is 'What do you do to stay in shape?' I have a family history and that is not exactly the way I would like to go. Thanks -Mark As you journey through life take a minute every now and then to give a thought for the other fellow. He could be plotting something.-Hagar the Horrible

I go to the Gym most days. I have two routines which I do every other day. So the first day I might do a programme consisting of the treadmill, reclining bike, rotex (a bizzar contraption that you do a sort of bouncy jog on) and a "top" (which is like a bike but operated with the hands rather than the feet). And on the second day I swim. If I have the time, usually only if I'm in on the weekend, I combine both (although the swim on the combined routine is shorter) as gentle swimming is quite a nice cool down exercise. So far I've lost about 5kg in two months. See my blog[^] for weekly progress reports.

if I ever get out of computers this would be the #1 reason why. Sitting behind a desk all day every day just sucks. I work out at a gym and I only eat 2 meals a day. Beyond that, its a matter of making them not put the bags of candy bars in our area (those into XP programming will know what I'm talking about). The one other thing that has helped me too though is golfing. It's not extremely strenuous even if you walk, but it reminds you to get out and get some exercise.

Although it sounds like one of the best bits of XP I have to say that it would just fustrate me. I did a physical and nutritional test recently and I've basically to cut down big time on food that, to me, is a staple. Especially cereals and bread! That's going to be really tough. On the up-side I've been told to increase the amount of Kiwi fruit. So, if they have a food bucket for your XP team make sure they put good stuff in rather than piles of sweets.

I'm genuinely not interested in exercising, so I have to force myself to make time for it. Usually I go walking. I really enjoy single-track mountain biking, but there aren't many trails near where I live, so I don't bike very often. Finding friends that you can exercise with makes it more fun (e.g. go biking together, etc), but if you're like me all of your friends sit at a computer all day and don't like exercising either :) ------------------------------------------ - Mike "No human being would stack books like that." - Dr. Venkman

That's curious. I also used to hate the idea of exercising. I'd always find something less energetic to do instead. But since I've joined a gym I really need those endorfins. It has been described as the best legal way to get high! :-D :jig: :-D And boy does everyone know when I've been to the gym because I'm grinning like a cheshire cat.

Cycling - not enough to fight the bulge, but keeps me from getting to couchy. Swimming once a week, pretty mind-numbing but does my back good.

I have to agree that swimming is a bit mind numbing - I can't take my walkman while I'm swimming, I listen to audiobooks while exercising so I don't get bored until the endorphins kick in.

Don't know what "experts recommend", but I started swimming regulary because my neck(back muscles were permanentlty under pressure (no wonder with the jobwe have). And boy, after one lane you notice all the stones and metal bars in your neck dissolve

see, you hit on an excellent point. 'they need to put good stuff instead of piles of sweets'. We've got a suggestion box that I've put in 'bring us fruit' many times and we just get ignored. Higher ups read the whole XP literature and think it has to be candy or we will form a circle in the center of the building and refuse to code.... or some such like that. Fortunately, my team is on the same wave length as me and we just send the buckets of snickers back.

Well I.... errr.... Dancing around like a fool either sitting in my chair or when getting food, going to bathroom and also during breaks for typing. OK so working from Home does allow me to do this slightly easier than if I worked in an office. Also I 'dance' around the house, like when I do the washing up.. Put some music on and dancing whilest cleaning. I often walk into town (it is about a 35 minute walk) and to Uni. when needed. Been thinking of taking up house gymnastics (That was a link) as a fun form of exercising. - J

I do mountian and road riding, alternating with doing aerobic exercise in the gym. My goal is to keep my metabolism elevated. I gained 20 pounds in about 6 months since I stopped working from home and I'm going to get rid of it.

I try to start every day with half a pound of bacon or sausage, a couple of eggs, toast with gobs of jam, and wash it all down with a pot or two of coffee. Lunch is usually a pizza or tacos, except Mondays when I have a hot fudge sundae instead. I sometimes skip dinner, but never a pitcher or three of beer and a few rounds of darts in the evening. Just for grins, though, I do as many pushups, crunches, and leg lifts as I can stand on most mornings, then attend karate classes two or three times a week. Oh, and I walk to and from the pub, never drive.
