Here is the latest comments from a user (?) of one of the freeware programs that I wrote and distributed for a couple of years to several hundred thousand users: "hey you idiot, make a good program for once, that is at least compatible with Windows XP. I would appreciate if idiots like you werent tought to program or helped by other good programmers who wasted their time on a good for nothing moron like you." I guess, this message goes well with the survey about "Programmer's egos"... :) I am not sure how I feel about it. Sad, I guess... I am not sure how to deal with someone like this ether... Do I ignore him, do I post a polite response or do I go off on the person? What do you think? Thanks.

<rant> I would personally respond with an 'updated' version of your program which purports to fix the bug running under XP. Instead, it would contain a virus to fuck his computer up big style. A bit harsh maybe but I've been in this situation before and it *really* annoys me when I've sweated blood over a piece of software which I have given away for free and people rudely complain when it doesn't do what they expect it to. Kinda like when people complain about inaccuracies in the articles here - are they forgetting that this stuff is all free and people are only doing this to help them. </rant> James Spibey I love the word naked, it's brilliant isn't it, 'naked'. When I was a kid I used to write the word naked on a bit of paper hundreds of times and rub my face in it - Jeff, Coupling, BBC2

Well, my first intention was to kick his ass. In fact, if I was to meet him right now he would need all the help he could get. But then I've calmed myself down a little and responded like this: "I am glad that you feel this strongly about my program, my skills and me. Thank you for posting such an informative message. At last we all know how you feel. I hope you feel better soon. Thank you." I think it got him very upset and he posted something ... I am not even sure what it was suppose to be... A threat, I guess... I hate cowards!!!

Thank you for suggestion. :) I think you are bringing up a whole new theme into this. I mean the whole "freeware" issue when you spend all your time making something for people and give it to them for free and then you get slapped in the face by a bunch of f**kers like the one who posted crap on my message board. I have a good friend who thinks that you should never ever give anything for free, because people should never get something they did not earn. When people get staff they did not pay for (one way or the other) they get spoiled and corrupted... My ventures in freeware world are full of examples of people abusing the good thing and turning into this monsters who expect you to keep giving them stuff. And if you refuse to give - they demand it like you owe them something. It is truly amazing... and very frustrating...

First of all, this useless person is the idiot if he thinks this stuff can be strictly "taught". But then he would not be crying and moaning about a program he could not possibly write or even fix, if he could have written it himself in the first place. So why would you give a sh*t what he thinks? Banish him from your server and be done with it. But first suggest he invest in a spell-checker (not freeware). JMHO. BB

From reading your other replies to other people's responses, I feel you are being far to leanient on this guy. First, I would send him an email telling him very politely that you appreciate the feedback, but were unable to find his order in your database, and require him to send you the receipt he would have received after purchasing the product. (yes I know it was freeware, but make out it wasn't). Obviously he will reply with yet another strongly worded email - but this was the intention. Now send one further email to him under you name saying that you know he is a pirate and you are reporting him to the B.L.A. (note: that stands for Bob Lovers Anonymous ;)) Then, leave it for about a week before initiating an extensive personal data collection process using as many government and/or news web sites as possible, and maybe a few phone calls to his local council too. Find out how many years this guy has been living at his current address; find out if he has ever withheld taxes; find out when he last made a credit application; find out how many illegitimate children he has fathered; etc, etc. Posing as a public liquidation officer or corporate balif will generally let you have access to this kind of data with no real questions asked. When you enough data to be able to sucessfully scare the sh*t out of him with your knowledge, write a carefully worded - but strong - email indicating that you have sufficient proof that he is a major international Intellectual Property Violator, and you have referred his case to your superiors to be handled immeadiately. Then edit your email account settings so the name reads "Templeman, D."; the email address reads "d.templeman@bla.gov"; and set the the reply address to one you own). Make sure to sign your name at the base of the email like so: Officer Templeman, Ricahard D. Chief of External Investigations B.L.A. Mark it as Important and Confidential and then hit Send. Sit back and wait for the reply... :-D ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. Thanks.

My god, there is so much here to be appalled at... Colin, I'm in Melbourne :-) Where in gods own country are you? I spent a fantastic month in the North Island a year or so ago... and will someday repeat the feat in the South Island... I'd migrate to NZ if I was convinced I could make a living there... I'm happy for you to VMTU Mindprobes as long as evil things don't happen :-) Hey, I've seen you here a while now so I trust :-) hmmm, try two hours earlier - the majority of our schedule is Australian peak times... and if you happen to see Robbie online - it's me Rob :-))) Rob Manderson http://www.mindprobes.net
