Well, the software is free, so he has no room to bitch. Tell him thanks for the feedback and that you truly appreciate such valuable insight that is as eloquently stated as he has done. Add a smiley at the end - that'll piss him off. Oh yeah, you should include his comments on your web page so that others can see how much he enjoys your software. Now, if only Dundas would only finish their CNukeThatCluelessAsshole class, we'd be in business. How would you go about building a CNukeThatCluelessAsshole John, Would it be something like a Denial of service type attack or email flooding or just plain bombing ! Should it work as a group project using authorised drones also and 3rd party servers ? I don't know the law but is it legal ? Because I'd hate to get involved in something illegal. You yanks might believe in the freedom of speech stuff but I believe in the freedom to Nuke nastys. I never signed the SALT II thingy so I suppose I'm exempt! :-) Regardz Colin J Davies

Here is the latest comments from a user (?) of one of the freeware programs that I wrote and distributed for a couple of years to several hundred thousand users: "hey you idiot, make a good program for once, that is at least compatible with Windows XP. I would appreciate if idiots like you werent tought to program or helped by other good programmers who wasted their time on a good for nothing moron like you." I guess, this message goes well with the survey about "Programmer's egos"... :) I am not sure how I feel about it. Sad, I guess... I am not sure how to deal with someone like this ether... Do I ignore him, do I post a polite response or do I go off on the person? What do you think? Thanks.

I wouldn't take offence. The person that wrote it has too much time on their hands. If any body is the idiot its them, they can even create the program themsleves. If you are still maintaining the program i would try to get feedback on what to improve if i was you. I have has somepeople email me things like that such as "it will not work on win98" and thats all they said. I developed the program on Win98. Go Figure. -Steven Visit Ltpb.8m.com

<rant> I would personally respond with an 'updated' version of your program which purports to fix the bug running under XP. Instead, it would contain a virus to fuck his computer up big style. A bit harsh maybe but I've been in this situation before and it *really* annoys me when I've sweated blood over a piece of software which I have given away for free and people rudely complain when it doesn't do what they expect it to. Kinda like when people complain about inaccuracies in the articles here - are they forgetting that this stuff is all free and people are only doing this to help them. </rant> James Spibey I love the word naked, it's brilliant isn't it, 'naked'. When I was a kid I used to write the word naked on a bit of paper hundreds of times and rub my face in it - Jeff, Coupling, BBC2

I would do the same, but... the user would keep sending you more messages like it, and would post it somewhere else. I agree that they should be thankful for the software thats free. -Steven Visit Ltpb.8m.com

I've been trying for a couple of days, but I think my class hierarchy is problematic. Everytime I try to derive a new class from CClueless and CAsshole. I think it's a mixture of namespace issues (it seems that CSphincter and CAnalPore are abstract classes with identical but differentiated quasi-static callback functions), and Microsoft's tendancy to abstract most of the class' functionality through a dense intertwining set of macros, constants, and obscure STL code. Add all of that to the fact that it's a damn COM object with an undisclosed interface, and we're talkin a major crapload of work. On the positive side, a quick phone call to Microsoft has confirmed (at least for me) the possibility of them improving the help files and extending this COM object into it's own full-fledged next-generation framework that they're tentatively calling ".BUTT". No way. I made the mistake a few months back of paying to much attention to you guys when BBNO was first dreamt up. "Yes David", "Go on David", "It will be fun". Yeah Right. An entire week of very little real work being done purely for two and a half minutes of absolute drivel! Then of course there was the web site http://www.davidwulf.co.uk/bob. 'nuff said about that. In fact, the only worthwhile thing to come out of all this was the Bill SerGio animation. :omg: ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. I released an ultra Kewl and useful program on CNET a couple of years ago and the only payment I asked for was a preformatted thankyou letter "if they desired" to be sent and I got more abuse than thankyous :-((( So I haven't released anymore Freeware ! I am suprised that i have not been sent any abusive mail about 404Browser (404Browser's website) And its a freeware browser. All i have recieved is emails that people don't respond back after my reply and one virus i didn't open. -Steven Visit Ltpb.8m.com

I'd be tempted to go 'Outlaw Programmer' on him, but I'd probably end up just politely offering him a refund (yes, I mean that in irony, I know it was free), and accept full blame for failing to test your program on OS's that had not been released at the time. Then I'd sign him up to a ton of mailing lists, post with his name to some pr0n newsgroups so that he got onto some serious spam lists, and make every future free program I wrote require users to enter their name locally, so that if he ever downloaded anything from me again, a message came up to say how much you hate him and how the contents of his hard drive are now vapour.
