What OPTICAL mouse do you use?

i too had an issue with my microsoft (oem gateway) optical usb mouse jumping around when i first got it. after trying everything i could think of (upgrade drivers, try different usb ports etc) i switched out the mousepad and the jumping stopped. seemed to me that when i would move over different colors was when the jumping would start. it will still jump if i don't use a mousepad or if i use one of my mousepads that have a designer pattern, especially with light and dark colors mixed. if the mousepad is a solid color, no jumping. not exactly sure this was the issue, just my experience...

Hi, I have a question: What brand and type of optical mouse do you use? I bought one two weeks ago, Genius NetScroll Optical PS2, and I would never buy it again :-( When I used it, the cursor moved to random place on the screen quite often. It is waste of money. I changed it back to old ball-point mouse, but I can't get used to not having a wheel there. I always believed that Genius is a good brand. I'm thinking about a new one, maybe from Microsoft - Does any of you have its mouses - I prefer those with cable, but without a ball. Thanks for your response.
I just got a Logitech MX510. Very nice. Have yet to do much gaming with it though, but it works great in Windows.
Searching the web without Google is like straining sewage with your teeth.

And it rocks*. Always a chore using a co-workers machine and they have a normal ball-mouse. I end up bringing my mouse with and plugging it in. I did however manage to break the scroll-wheel during a serious session of Half Life :-O * That is the new version. I don't know, but I've tried almost all before I write it out. I had there plastic mousepad, cloth mousepad, paper, wood,... nothing helped. It jumped mainly when I was moving mouse slowly and then I got faster, and few times I clicked to X button instead of OK, so I throw it out...

And what's the resolution of your mouse, I think (I forgot it now, but I think I have one of the lowest resolution. Fortunately it wasn't so expensive. It costs about 13 $, MS mouse costs 3 times more than this one :-( This is the reason why I want to be sure before I buy for the second time.

You may experience the cursor jumping more often on certain types of surfaces. For example wood-grain and red-coloured surfaces tend to increase the severity of the problem. Reason? The optical mouse takes an image of the surface underneath it 1500 times per second and then FFT's it and looks for changes. If the surface is too regular or smooth or too much the same colour as the LED light of the optical mouse, then the reported positions are not calculated properly. Try using a mouse pad or another type of surface. I had this problem on a nice wooden desk and had to invest in a cheap mouse pad... Oh - I use a Logitech Wheel Mouse (USB). Indeed. I inherited it from my ex-boss many years ago. The dark grey rubber on the right is wearing a bit thin and as I mentioned I thumped the scroll-wheel but apart from that it's been brilliant. You are right about the new ones, this baby is just right. I should scrounge around, see if I can stock up on some as-new ones so that when this one eventually does die I'll have replacements. We've been through a lot this mouse and I. It won't get binned even if it stops working. I use a Logitec optical mouse and it's great. I've had it a couple of years now at least. The only problem I've having now is that the little smooth plastic pads on the bottom are starting to come unstuck and making the bottom of the mouse a little sticky. Anybody else had this problem?

If the cursor is jumping around, the surface isn't compatible with your mouse (the light is refracted/reflected too much). Try using a good old fabric mouse mat, and your cursor's movement will be as smooth as an android's butt. :cool: -- ...Coca Cola, sometimes war...

I think (really not sure) I have only 300. Certainly I haven't 800. So it's maybe the problem.

I'm using Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 2[^] USB/PS2 in the office and it rules! It consists of a wireless keyboard and a wireless optical mouse with the tilt weel, had absolutely no problems with it, and the smooth wheel scrolling is great. But on the other hand, I've been using 2 or 3 Genius Netscroll Optical mice (is this the correct plural?) - 5 button PS2 versions - and I'm still using one at home (even right now) and never had any problems with these as well. But it just doesn't feel as comfortable as the MS mouse. Some people say that Microsoft hardware is even better than their software :) I can only recommend it. Rado

I had the same problem with every mouse that I have used on a hard surface (like the plastic mouse pads with pictures, or desks), the pads were rubbed away after several months of use, and the mouse became sticky as you say. That's why I always use the mouse pads made of fabric these days, they don't rub away the plastic pads. And I also prefer the gel pads where you can rest your wrist, they're just great! Of course, if you try to use a mouse with rubbed away pads on a mouse pad made of fabric it will be a pain, it will stick even more. Rado

On my Desktop I have the Dell-branded Logitech mouse that was delivered with the computer, and for my laptop I use a Logitech Mini Mouse Optical. Both work fine 'til now. Greets Roland

I (actually, everyone at the office) use a Microsoft Basic optical mouse and it works flawlessly on every single machine. At home, I use a Microsoft Basic optical mouse (again) and (again) it works flawlessly. My wife uses a mini logitech optical mouse and often it goes crazy: the weird thing is that what seems to go crazy is the wheel, not the mouse pointer, but it's a hassle. Yes, even I am blogging now!
