Seems that the smokers have better social life.

The difference is that farting is natural and everybody does it, and it is harmless to others if somewhat of an annoyance (do you just hate when someone does it in the lift?!?) whereas smoking can cause permenant damage to those who are only near to people who actualy do the smoking itself. BTW I am a non-smoker :). -- Andrew.

Very touching story and very disturbing opinion. Did you have an argument too and just forgot to post it?
The other day I was riding my mountain bike up a difficult hill. As you can imagine I was gasping for air. And what do you know? There's to people sitting on the side of the trail smoking cigs. What am I supposed to do now? Turn around? I continue on while taking in about 4-5 deep breaths of smoke filled air. I was coughing for the next mile. It hurt. Am I supposed to be understanding in their "right" to enjoy life as they see fit? The other annoying thing is when you're sitting outside a restaraunt having a nice meal when someone takes the seat next to you and starts smoking. Of course they can't believe it when you politley ask them to stop smoking or pick another seat. I wonder if you'd feel the same way if you saw what several years of second hand smoke can do to someone's lunges?

If they follow your logic they should say: Am I supposed to understand biker's "right" to ride a bike while it is so disturbing to me? And you say... YES! Of cause, because it is my right to ride my bike wherever I please... Is it so hard to imagine that bikers can be disturbing to someone sometimes? I myself don't like when bikers get on the side of the road in your lane and you are trying your hardest to avoid hitting them while avoiding hitting the car next to you. If you ask me to stop smoking in the restaurant I will. Because I can respect your feelings. If someone doesn't understand when they are being asked their problem is not smoking, but lack of manners. It's all about mutual respect and recognition of rights on the both sides and finding solutions to sticky situations like you've described. But solutions is not in denying the other side's rights.

I don't riding on hiking only trails. My presence isn't a health hazard. Smoking is a health hazard. My presence doesn't cause you any discomfort other than a minor annoyance. Your smoking does cause a physical discomfort. You don't really call your position a defensible argument, do you? Because you have to encounter things that annoy you, and you can't ban it, then we should put up with smokers lighting up everywhere they feel like it? Riiiiight!! I once worked for a company where the smokers had a little ante-room, off the cafeteria, and I would crack up every time I walked by and the door was open. The smoke was so thick, you couldn't see the back wall. But they would be puffing away... **enjoying** themselves. That works for me.

I don't want to kill you Christian. Then there would be one less person to answer my questions in the forum. Here in California, they have thrown us outside and they still complain that our smoke is bothering them out there. Hence the car exhaust analogy. The rest of the nation needs to stand up now, before it's too late. In some places they've even made it illegal to smoke outside. We are the only people they are allowed to discriminate against, so all their hatred and frustrations get focused on us. That's my take on things anyways. Cathy
Cathy-- You're missing the point. Smokers are being treated exactly the way they treated non-smokers for years. What goes around comes around. And smokers, in their day, had absolutely no consideration and would smoke wherever and whenever they felt like it. How many times I remember, before restaurants had no smoking sections, which wasn't that long ago, where Buddy, one table over, would light up a cigarette, just as the food at your table arrived, with complete disregard for anyone else's enjoyment or comfort. Now we're suppose to feel sorry for Buddy... now that the tables have turned? Hahahahahahaha!!! I don't thiiiiink so!!!

And smokers, in their day, had absolutely no consideration and would smoke wherever and whenever they felt like it. How many times I remember, before restaurants had no smoking sections, which wasn't that long ago, where Buddy, one table over, would light up a cigarette, just as the food at your table arrived, with complete disregard for anyone else's enjoyment or comfort. Did you ever see that movie Dr. Strange Love? The guy wakes up years later and first thing the doctors give him a cigarrette telling him "We found out it's good for you." You hurt yourself not the subject of your hatred. I will admit it's pretty wild watching those old movies where the nurse is sitting in a chair smoking a cigarrette right next to a patient in a hospital bed. So we are showing an equal amount of concern about what affect the non-smoking rules have on smokers. I say let 'em whine, and continue on with their tortured logic about how the habits of other people annoy them. Truth is... we don't care!! Let the smokers collectively kill themselves in the privacy of their own home or car... and nowhere else! Why? Because for decades we put up with them smoking everywhere... and now we finally have them on the run. Yahoo!!!

Hehehehehe... It's so nice to have someone so solicitous of my health and well being. Thanks Cathy! I never really thought of myself as hating smokers... I just enjoy seeing them, after years of abusing non-smokers, suffer a little abuse of their own. And it is kind of funny hearing them inventing excuses and rationals on why people should put up with their disgusting habits. Well we put up with them for years... but not anymore!!!! JM
