Gamecube vs Playstation for 6 year old?

Marc, I agree with you. My daughter played games on the PC when she was 4-5, but they were of the "Reader Rabbit" variety. I don't think the game consoles lend themselves to educational interaction.

Overall I agree that GC would be a better choice, but with a PS2 you also have the ability to run all of the older PS1 games too. My boys (6 and 8) love to play on the PS2, but they are asking for a GC for the holidays. GC can also interface with the newer GameBoys too, if they have them and there are a few games that can be played on both tolet you take your character with you. Needless to say that we will probably have a GC by the end of the year for them so that I can use the PS2 for other things like GTA3 San Andreas ;) Steve Maier, MCSD MCAD

I posted same question last year. In the end I settled for Gameboy Advance SP[^]. :cool: But if you wait for few months Sony is coming with Playstation Portable (PSP)[^] to compete with Nintendo's Gameboy line. Answering your question, I am planning to buy GameCube for my daughter's 7th Birthday.

I have to say that I agree. When we were on the mainland recently, we walked past an arcade, and I let my four year old play some 'hold the gun and shoot' type games with me. His behaviour for the rest of the day changed my opinion of the effect of video games on kids. I had a Cube, and after finishing the Mario games ( because I've finished ever Mario game, ever ), I sold it because I was sick of the effect it had on my kids, not wanting to do anything but play games ( not that I let them, but that it was constant whining ). There's a joke to be made about VB "programming" in there somewhere :-) But that style of game is good fun (I like dancing around like a prat), and if you see someone playing DDR freestyle in the arcades, it's pretty damn impressive. And if you think playing DDR is excessively "erotic", you've never seen well-endowed women playing a horse racing arcade game that involves lots of rocking :-D But I'll end that discussion there, as I'm probably bending the kid sister rule :rolleyes:

Definitely the Gamecube. Nintendo has always been more family oriented. After owning both a GC and PS2 I can also say this about them... - The GC has better hardware than the PS2 (video card, and even the cords on the controllers are better quality). You'll notice animation tends to be smoother. - The GC has smaller, sturdier discs (perfect for kids) that don't break and scratch as easy. - The PS2 is an ugly machine with controllers that feel cheap and a CD drive that looks like it could break off just by looking at it. - The PS2 has a lot of games; however, most of them tend to not be appropiate for kids anyway. A guy that I work with tho had the first controller port on his GC go bad. Not sure why, but he was then unable to play some games because of it. He eventually ended up getting a new GC and still has the one with the bad first port. I definately agree that most PS2 games are not appropriate for kids the age you are talking about. Go the your local Walmart, or BestBuy (or whereever) and look at the games that they will be wanting. If they like Pokemon and Mario, then GC will have more choices for them. That is/was a problem for us because of the lack of games, but they could play their PS1 games on it. Steve Maier, MCSD MCAD

It depends a lot on the ammount that the kids play. Some people let their kids play so they don't have to use energy to take care of them and then it's wrong, other people just let the kids play games a bit in an controlled environment which don't harm anyone. - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" I'll agree with that. I played some reader-rabbit/logic puzzle games when I was 3 on my grandfather's IBM XT. :) However, that stuff is different from consoles. Consoles are not good for kids that young. I won't let my 5 and 3 year old brothers watch me play Warcraft, they get too absorbed in it. If they watch me play Halo, it's only for a few minutes. If they start complaining about me sending them out of the room...I tell them to go play with some toys or play outside. They just get too wrapped up in the games and playing them every waking moment. It used to be that I did let them watch Halo and Seth (the 5 year old) would walk around carrying small objects as if they were plasma pistols...making the charging sound with them. I told him he couldn't watch Halo anymore, and he's stopped.

I don't think it is our place to say how you should raise your kids. You have already made the decision in anycase. I'd say the GC (in my later childhood I had plenty of fun on the good old original Nintendos so I am biased. It also never stoped me reading, books were just so much better I didn't need to be told to stop and read instead). Dude, I'm only 26! :) I grew up on rock 'n roll, though, and what they pass off as "rock" these days is anything but. To note, I don't mind seeing a little erotica (I'm not a prude), but would you really want your 14 year-old daughter dancing like that? I remember a story that Jack McCoy ("Law and Order") was telling about how one time he saw this good looking gal at the beach in a skimpy bathing suit and couldn't help but fantisizing about her. We she turned around it was his daughter! He felt ill to his stomach. While it's fiction, it definitely drives the point home (I hope). Besides, I'm not sure how the teenage birthrate is in SA, but here in America it's growing and the really sad thing is that people are becoming more and more apathetic about it. Dancing like that is merely advertising, IMO. On a different note, I'm anything but a conformist, and seeing a large group of people "dance" all the same is quite boring.
