Hi everyone, I applied for a job about a week back that is so perfect for me. I was wondering how long one should wait before following up on the status of the application? Also, is it a good sign if they do not send a reply for a week? Usually, they return the application if they do not like it.. right? Or maybe it ends up in the trash, who knows? Views? Cheers, Pankaj /** I'm the one who's gonna have to die When it's time for me to die So let me live my life The way I want to - Jimi Hendrix */

Have you ever heard the saying "The squeaky wheel gets the grease"? If you think you are good for the job, keep checking back and make sure they know it. Personally though, I have not left an interview not knowing if I have the job or pretty sure at least. Jobs that i've got have tended to come back within a couple of weeks, unless there is a closing date for applications. The only time it's been longer than that, was when i didn't get the job. Some don't bother to let you know, one company sent me a letter 6 weeks later, i'd already got another job by then though! Kev Pearman MCAD

Big or small firm? Working for a small firm I can say it can be a bit annoying having candidates phoning us every other day to check up. We don't have an HR dept. so I have to handle it personally. I appreciate that the guy made an effort but if I say "I *will* contact you in one week whatever our decision" I mean I will do it. An email for me is better than a phone call if you really, really need to followup. Don't follow that up with "did you get my email" a day later if I haven't replied though. Unless you get a bounce, I got your email, it's with the 500 other ones I got that day :) If it's a big firm, then follow up. They have dedicated staff and things can get more easily lost even with that as the number of applicants is probably greater. They also care less. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: "Gassho rei, Watson-san!" Crikey! ain't life grand?

Yeah no for sure agencies are a different story. Hound their arses (or just don't use them rather). I am referring to contacting the company directly. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: "Gassho rei, Watson-san!" Crikey! ain't life grand?

I had a situation at the end of last year where the recruiter either went on a long vacation, left the company completely, or something (I never did find out what) and didn't get me handed over to his replacement. It's worth following up. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

Follow up with your contact in the company. If you don't have a contact in the company who can go knock on the door of the hiring guy you don't have a chance and should move on. Remember, who you know is more important than what you know. If the job was advertised, there are 500 others who applied for this job. 100 of those think it is perfect and have the right skills to do it. You can try following up, but the only times I've gotten more than they will call me (they never did) was when either the position was filled, or never existed in the first place. Often it was still advertised on the day I did my follow up! I belive in the US they are required to keep all applications for 3 months (or some such). They are under no obligation to look at them though, if you didn't pass the 10 second screening you will never been seen again. Which is why your personal contact in the company follows up. Nobody wants to explain why they didn't give you a simple interview, so your contact can help ensure you get one. They still might hire someone else, but at least they can say this person was better and they gave you an honest shot. Keep looking, I've never gotten a job with more than 2 other canidates. Often I was the only choice, and the question was am I worth making a position for, not am I the best canidate. This is a much better position to be in. Good luck though.

It's common practice to send a follow-up letter the very next day, thanking whomever for taking the time to meet with you. If this was simply you remitting an application and not an actual interview, I'm not sure a follow-up is expected/necessary. I could be wrong, though.
