That sucks! I've heard about companies like those (mostly American), and hopefully I never will work for one with that attitude. I think the UK laws are more geared to favour the employee, rather than the other way around. One of my NY fellow programmer commented about how absolutely difficult it is for a UK company to get rid of an employee without some kind of financial loss, or legal backlash. We tend to take things like that for granted.

It's also very difficult to can someone here in SA. Even if somebody is proved incompetent they have to be redeployed in a less demanding capacity. We even have something called a constructive dismissal, where an employee resigns because of veiled or other pressure to do so. The employee enjoys the same rights as one dismissed in the normal way. I know the feeling, left my last job, and gave 3 months notice, the last month; especially the last 2 weeks were hell. The company should let you go as soon as all the *loose* ends have been tidied up, it would be better for both parties. Make use of this *boring* time by catching up on articles, trawl thru the MSDN. I'd rather be working on a project I'm enthusiastic about.

In Denmark the companies usually have 3 months notice, while you have one. (it depends on the business and your union, but this is the standard for IT) If they want you fired faster they can tell you to leave now, but they have to pay you for 3 months even you don't work... - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" In the US 2 weeks is typical. If I want to leave I have to tell them two weeks in advance, if they want to let me go they give me two weeks. (though if the company is bankrupt that doesn't happen) If they fire me I'm gone now, but unless they did all the paper work correctly they can get sued. (that is they need to proove in a court of law that I wasn't doing the job and I was given opportunity to reform) Many large companys will make you leave the moment those two weeks start, but they still pay your for them, you just work from home (doing whatever you want as you have no assigned tasks). That is, if I give me two weeks the boss calls security, helps me pack up my stuff, takes my key, and sends me out the door, I'm not allowed back in, but I still get paid as if I was working. I know of one guy who gave 6 months notice and he was escorted out like that. (he had a business that he was ready to start, but couldn't do something until spring so he was going to be nice and help them train his replacement) They paid him for those 6 months but didn't let him work.

Don't forget the downside. US employeers are more willing to take someone on because it costs less to get rid of them if it doesn't work out.

Most companies over here are like that. It's kinda a standard right. A company cannot just terminate your employment unless you have committed something that would constitute gross misconduct (according to the definition of such acts in your contract).... or if the company goes bust... then they just shut down. The employee is pretty well looked after in Irish law. Regards, Brian Dela :-) http://www.briandela.com IE 6 required.

In the UK the notice period is mutual - the only way they can get you off site quickly is to give you pay in lieu of notice. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Have some fun, just tell your manager that the work you are doing matches exactly what your next company is planning to do, and whn you go there you will be able to point out what errors they need to avoid! Mind you at one company I worked at one guy was on 3 months notice, he really p****d off the MD, his 3 months notice was spent in an empty office witout even a telephone!
