If these people exist (and who are we kidding) then the question is, what are we going to do with them? Instead of changing the more introverted engineers to make them fit into the world of extroverts, maybe we should be looking for ways to take advantage of the particular styles and abilities of introverts. And instead of trying to fix them, maybe we should be making sure that smart, interesting people who happen to be introverts get the same respect and recognition as their extroverted counterparts. from The Tyranny of the Extroverts Not bad reading. Engineers come in all flavors, so I am not going to generalize, but is it possible that some people are attracted to engineering because they find that, at least generally, things are more interesting than people? Can we agree that many of the people who like math and science are also people who like reading, and thinking about things, and programming, and designing things, and puzzles, and solving problems? And can we stipulate that at least some of these people are awkward in social situations, or struggle with the challenges of public speaking? Im sure im considered to be an introvert IRL , but i _do_ like people , just not dumb people , wich is the case of many extrovert sales people (didnt say all) i have nothing incommon with them and since they outnumber my kind here at work , i will gladly sit in silence while they go on and on about eg. what some football player did wrong in the last game they all watched... that gives me absolutely no intellectual stimula at all :P but imagine this: place 15 "intorvert" hardcore developers around a lunchtable and place one "extrovert" sales person there... im sure the roles would be the oposite then ........ once the sales person understands he need to shut up in order to not look stupid that is.. //Roger

I bought (and read) a book called The Introvert Advantage a while back. It helped me understand myself (an introvert) a bit better. It also gave some insight into how extraverts "work". Highly recommended.

Not everyone wants to be a leader, just as not everyone wants to be an engineer. To which I add, some people are actually satisfied writing libraries or drivers or designing icons or writing help files so stop trying to encourage us to "enhance our careers" or some such nonsense. And to company management, human resources and sales and marketing I add; when we engineers, artists and writers display discontent with our jobs, it's generally because you completely suck at yours, not because we dislike the work itself. To be more tactful; if you would just give us the tools we need, the general direction to go, then get out of the way, we'll get the job done and better than anything you could ever dream of. (That was more fun and less aggravating than ranting about .NET.) Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke
