Hmmm... I may have come to the conclusion that all (that I've found) free GroupWare/ProjectManagement/Forges suck. I have spent a good chunk of time over the weekend looking for a good project managing software to run as an "intranet" site, but failed miserably. I'm talking about the ones you can download and not the services you can use on the Internet such as SourceForge, Tigris, etc. I looked at: - myXoopsForge. (Has lots of bugs.) - NovellForge. (Has issues too.) - GForge. (Uhh... the installation looks really nasty.) - eGroupWare. (Has issues. Site screwed itself twice on me.) - phpCollab. (Better. Has problems uploading large files.) Can anyone recommend a good one to me? ...or rant on any other bad ones once used? ;P

If you do not need to have the source code than you might want to consider Windows SharePoint Services as an option. It is free but you do need Windows Server 2003. I have been using it for a while and it suits my needs. You can customize pretty much everything and write your own module if you need it. Depending on what you need to do, DotNetNuke[^] might also satisfy your needs. Yves

Yes, I know exactly how you feel right now! I've been playing with these: - phpCollab - didn't like the navigation, etc - dotProject[^] - this looked promising at first, and we're using it now, but I can't say I like it. Anyway you may want to try it out - they also have an online demo[^] on the site, just use admin/admin or guest/guest to sign in. I also plan to try the SharePoint, it came preinstalled with our new Small Business Server 2003 but I didn't have the time to play with it yet. At least the interface and graphics are pretty decent, which is something you can often only dream of with the free/open source solutions. :) Just my 2 haliere. ;) Rado

I'll keep the SharePoint idea in mind. Thanks! I've put together a DNN site a few months ago. It's very nice. One of the most advanced content management systems I've seen. It just doesn't have all of the modules I need yet.

I've just tried the dotProject demo. It's definitely better than the previous ones I've used. This could be the one for me to use. By the way, what don't you like about dotProject?

I don't know, it's the overall feeling, small details. For example when you're editing something, there are two really really small buttons "Submit" and "Back" on the bottom, but they're not grouped, one is in the bottom left corner of the window and the other one in the bottom right corner. Or when you're working with tasks and entering start/finish dates, you can't enter the date into the field, you must use the pop-up calendar to do it. At least a "Today" button would often help. Another small annoyance is that when use sign in and choose companies or projects, the default tab is "Not applicable" instead of "All", etc. Rado

I got news for you. It's not just that a lot of the open source stuff sucks, you should see some of the crap we PAY huge money for. We use a system in my day job that we pay an exhorbitant amount of money for that crashes fairly often and its a beast to use. I have no idea why there isn't any really good stuff out there. For my growing business I've decided instead to use a mix of software from various vendors to fill the need since I can't find anything that really knocks my socks off that covers all the bases. We are considering salesforce.com for bug tracking and helpdesk support, ms project for project tracking, etc.
