MDaemon

Has anybody used or known of the email server product MDaemon being used in a high-throughput environment? Did it perform admirably, at, say, Microsoft Exchange levels? Us techies reckon it is an enterprise level product but one of our clients is picking a fight with us on this claim. He reckons we should "either use something better or write our own SMTP server product". I had to bite my tongue after hearing that. Write our own indeed. What a way to end my Friday, arguing with an accountant over what SMTP server to use! regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Michael Dunn wrote: "except the sod who voted this a 1, NO SOUP FOR YOU" Crikey! ain't life grand?

On Monday, tell him you wrote your own over the weekend, and use MDaemon - how will he know the difference? :) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Phoenix Paint - back from DPaint's ashes!

Why would anyone waste time arguing with an accountant about anything? Their sole function is to record what happenned, and any higher aspirations are mere delusions of grandeur. On the ladder of productive contributions they are the little rubber pads at the bottom that keep the thing from sliding out from under you. A novel solution - good idea! Although, just on the off chance that the accountant one day looks over the shoulder of someone managing the system it might be best to write a new web-based management interface. A little ASP, a little CSS and you're there.;) "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

This kind of thing drives me crazy. It always seemed to happen at my old job and I see it all the time. I just dont understand how people who are not knowledgable in Technology argue with people who are admins, developers or in someother technology field. They always seem to think they know what they are talking about. My prevous employeer always used to make remarks about things like that and would buy some crap software and then argue with the admins about how they dont know what they are doing. His hard drive would constantly crash and he would constantly get viruses but it was never something he was doing....ahhhhhhh I could go on for hours about this!

Here is a bit more info about that situation. Firstly, he is an accountant with enough IT knowledge to be dangerous. a little knowledge is a dangerous thing situation. He knows how to use VNC to log-into a server and check things out. Second, MDaemon has been crashing on his server. Oh no! MDaemon must be crap then afterall. But no, our assesment is simply that his server is under-specced. It is running a bunch of websites (ASP.NET + MSSQL) and serves as a mail server. All of this on single-processor, P4 with 512m memory and a single 40gig HD. It isn't even a proper server, it is a desktop PC stuck in a co-hosting facility. I wish it would catch fire so he would buy a new, proper server. That is the crux of the matter. He claims MDaemon is crap because the server crashes when he sends hundreds of thousands of emails through it all while thousands of users hit the websites hosted on the box (they are all web-apps so resource intensive, not just brochure websites.) The worst is that he has convinced my boss he is right and we, the techies, are wrong. Third, it would be lying to do what you suggest :) So I need a case-study or some stats or something to show that MDaemon is capable. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Michael Dunn wrote: "except the sod who voted this a 1, NO SOUP FOR YOU" Crikey! ain't life grand?

Indeed. I'm not sure why people pay us when they think they know better. If they know better, hire a guy off the street and instruct him rather than paying us so-called experts exhorbitant rates. I'm not being difficult. I bend over backwards for this client. But... I haven't got any answer except "buy better hardware" for his problem. He has blocked that from his mind, it isn't satisfactory to him and... well... what more can I say? regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Michael Dunn wrote: "except the sod who voted this a 1, NO SOUP FOR YOU" Crikey! ain't life grand?

As the saying goes 'the customer is always right'. State you opinion, and your costings, point out his solution costs X times more, is not as good, and will take you longer to implement. But if he insists you will be more than pleased to pocket his money!

You have to learn to use these situations to your advantage... :) Agree with him and then charge him 20K to buy and put in exchange.

Hi We're using MDaemon for our clients - and I'm quite impressed. The webmail is absolutely fantastic. The best I've ever seen !!! Honestly ! We have the "unlimited" version, and pays around $1300 for upgrade protection - we've done that for the past 3 or 4 years and will keep on doing that as long as the product and service is as it currently is. Errors found in the product are (mostly) fixed in the next release, and the support is OK. As far as I understand it - there isn't that many alternatives to mail servers running on windows if you don't want exchange. And we don't. One alternative might be VisNetic mailserver from Deerfield (http://www.deerfield.com/products/visnetic-mailserver/[^]), as they originate from the same company. I think MDaemon separeated from VisNetic -and they started working on their own mailserver. Anyway - we're very satisfied with it. Let the accountant write his own SMTP server - and lets get it locked in spamhaus.org at once until he gets security in place :-D /Jan Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions?
